Allergies and Anxiety

I have been finding a link between my allergies- dust, mold, animal dander,- and anxiety and panic attacks. I have seen stories about people suffering from anxiety disorders becoming allergic to food, etc., but I'm finding the link to work the other way, first the allergies and then the anxiety.

I have developed allergies within this last year, and at the onset of an attack, I sometimes feel very anxious and panicky, pent up and like I can't escape the feelings and sensations of the allergy. I end up feeling very moody and depressed, and feeling very victimized and sensitive to any allergen, as it may have a terrible effect on my mood and emotions. My partner says I am manifesting the allergy and that my anxiety is due to stress, which might be at least partly true. I feel like the anxiety and tension compounds the problems and results in a very uncomfortable situation for me and my family. I was wondering if anyone else might have a similar experience or ever heard of anything like this before.

Re: Allergies and Anxiety

I just completed an abnormal psychology course...Some people develop anxiety attacks from not being able to breathe during an asthma attack. You fear not being able to breathe and bring on an anxiety attack. Ask your doctor for some ativan to help you through the anxiety attack. It can be very frustrating to live with allergies. I have had them all of my life and find them very difficult to live with.

Re: Allergies and Anxiety

Thanks for the advise. I am a little wary of mood-altering drugs. Is that what ativan does? Does anyone have experience with this drug first-hand? Im curious,
Thanks very much

Re: Allergies and Anxiety

I think Ativan is prescribed as a substitute for valium. You would not take it everyday, just for a panic attack. If you are experiencing panic attacks daily though you would not want to use this. Then you might be better off with therapy.
