Try allergen-free sheets on his bed. Dustmites might be causing him congestion, seeing that his symptoms occur in the morning.

I agree that this sounds like a dustmite allergy. Dustmite mattress and pillow covers might help him.

Yep, sounds like dustmite allergy, that or dairy.

As well as getting protectors for the bedding, be sure to dust the whole room and especially remove clutter from under the bed. Change the pillows often and remove wool underlay. Even a Dust Mite wash works really well - eucalyptus oil. Its easy to find heaps of info on how to de dust the room, makes such a difference.

Hi Melanie

If it is established that your son (how old is he, by the way?) has a dust mite allergy the following may be of help to you (found the info on a website).
best regards
B

The following tips can help to reduce exposure:

Fit close weave / dust proof covers to matresses, pillows and duvets. Specialist allergy covers are readily available commercially.

Use man-made fibre filled pillow cases and duvets in preference to feather / down fillings.

Use man-made fibre rather than woollen blankets.

Washing bedding at 60deg C will kill Dust Mites and destroys dust mite allergens, or cold wash in anti dust mite (acaricidal) solution.

Vacuum floors, carpets, curtains, furniture and bedding regularly.

Use a powerful vacuum cleaner (1000W minimum recommended). Many are now fitted with a filtered exhaust system.

Choose wooden or man-made furniture in preference to natural fibres.

Keep carpets, soft furnishings and soft toys to a minimum in the bedroom, and spray regularly with acaricidal spray.

Use roller blinds or vertical blinds in preference to curtains or venetian blinds.

Use a damp cloth for dusting and cleaning.

Keep all clean clothing and bedding in closed cupboards.

Keep domestic pets out of bedrooms.

Try to maintain humidity below 50% if possible. This reduces the viability of House Dust Mite. Consider the purchase of a dehumidifier.

Dust mites may be killed by freezing. It might sound daft, but putting soft toys, like teddy bears etc. in the freezer overnight will also help.
