Dust - Allergies Message Board

Okay I have just been searching through this site for some help with some problems...but when I found allergies, I was like hmmm...I wonder if anyone has advice for me. Since I was about 8 years of age I have been allergic to dust mites-however, it is not a sneezing or wheezing type of allergy. I itch and break out in welts if I itch. It's not something that irritates me after years of becoming used to it, but I mean, if I get hit by something or fall down or anything like that, I swell up a great deal more than I should in the injured spot. It's very annoying. I was wondering if there is any type of antibiotic that could calm this reaction; the only thing a doctor ever prescribed was Benedryl...and all that did was make me drowsy.

Antibiotics only fight infection, not allergic reactions. The only drug that can combat an allergic reaction is an antihistimine, such as Benadryl. There is also Claritin/loratadine which is OTC and is non-drowsy. Your doctor could also prescribed Allegra, which is also non-drowsy.

I would go see an allergist. I am also allergic to dust & dust mites. But I get the classic symptoms; sneezing, watery/itchy eyes and lots of sneezing. I couldn't even vacuum or dust my bedroom without having an "attack". I even resorted to wearing those white dust masks that they sell for when you are sanding something. My kids thought mom looks really weird with her mask and her vacuum.

Since visiting with an allergy doctor and getting on Allegra & Rhinocort (I am also taking allergy shots) I am having a much easier time with dust.

OTC antihistimines work great but they always left me so groggy. Allegra does not and it takes care of my symptoms. I would recommend it.
