Tightness in Chest w/ allergies

Does anyone else have this. I have always been congested in my nose with bad post nasal drip. I have been been going to ENT and have been on just about every allergy medication. I went for allergy skin tests and am allergic to everthing trees grasses pollen mold and dust. I get a sore throat and in the middle of my chest about where your breastbones are I get this tight feeling kinda like its hard to breathe. I have had the asthma tests and they have all come back negative. Does anyone think this could be from the allergies and maybe post nasal drip dripping into my chest. Currently I take nasonex every morning and just switched from Claritan to Zyrtec. Please help me....

Re: Tightness in Chest w/ allergies

Hi sarra.........i also get this...........and i'm thinking its because of allergies. this year for me has been terrible. i am 36, and i feel like i should be at least 96.................i have so many symptoms, and the dr.s keep telling me its allergies.. i take flonase and allergra and they help on SOME days. i have an appointment in october to see another dr. and i've had this appointment for 7 months........so maybe he's real good and can give me some answers. ive been dealing with my symptoms since nov 04...........and i am so ready for some relief. what is your symptoms?? i have a list..........dizzy/lightheaded, brain fog, congestion, tired alot, occasional sneezing, aches and pains, and on and on............i know my family is getting tired of me not feeling good and not wanting to do anything, but i just don't feel like it. ive heard a few other people complain about their chest hurting......and say its from the drainage.........its very scary sometimes though. all of this has been for me, cause i always fear the worst. i hope you start to feel better very soon.

Re: Tightness in Chest w/ allergies

YESYES YES! My chest tightness got so bad, I went to the ER once. They tested me for asthma also, and all tests came up negative. My allergist said I had sino-bronchial syndrome, and it is when sinus drainage drips in your chest and causes the bronchial tubes to constrict. In my case, it wasn't just allergy drainage, a CT scan showed chronic sinusitis. My symptoms cleared up after sinus surgery, and they have not returned, even during allergy season.

Re: Tightness in Chest w/ allergies

I was worried about this as I am still battling allergy and sinus stuff very badly and, Sat and Sun my chest was kind of burning...when I would enhale a deep breath, it would burn and feel tight now today it's just more achy rather than any burning but kind of a tightness. I wonder if this could just be due to trying to breath for so long?

Re: Tightness in Chest w/ allergies

I have identical symptoms often. They follow exposure to grass/pollen/mold/dust. I have been able to tone them down with Rx to Nexium. My burn wakes me up at night when I have had a major exposure. I am considering going to a GERD specialist, most of whom say stay away from chocolate and soft drinks.

I removed all cloth sofas (a powerful source of dust mites)...replaced with leather and carpet with wood flooring. Also, I wash all bed clothes in hot water once a week. These things help.

I too am troubled because I have to limit what I do. I rarely go outside unless it is raining or very cold. I also stay away from rooms where people wear strong perfume.

Do not be discouraged. I now try to focus on the things I can do rather than the things I should not.

Re: Tightness in Chest w/ allergies

I also get chest tightness, and even wheezing, from my allergies. I used to only have these symptoms in late June/July, but this year, it seems to have hit me in October. I find that along with the zyrtec and nasonex, the inhaler I have, Maxair, works well when I am really coughing a lot. I try to only use it when the coughing brings on more wheezing and crackling noises, high in my chest, like you describe. I am not asthmatic either, just kind of have that reaction with my allergies here and there. Not fun!! And the headaches that come on after a particular cough sometimes...ugh.

Re: Tightness in Chest w/ allergies

Sarra, I've gotten this too. It can be very frightening. I found that what helped the most was getting very active with getting the allergens out of my home as best I could. This meant getting rid of the plants, carpets, etc... It was actually kind of nice because it gave my bedroom a new "minimalist" look.

Re: Tightness in Chest w/ allergies

Wow. I have many of the same symptoms. I have constant nasal congestion especially during the rainy season here in the bay area. I'm up late tonight due to congestion and chest discomfort. The chest discomfort comes and goes. Sometimes its a sharp pain. Scary stuff.
