Deviated Septum question - Allergies Message Board

I have been seening an allergist for a year and a half. I've been getting allergy shots and been taking Allegra and Nasonex. While I'm happy I can somewhat breath out of my nose, I still have problems. I went to an ENT for a different issue and he told me that I have a deviated septum. He said it looked like I had broken my nose (don't remember ever having done so). He recommended that I have the surgery to correct it. My father and his two brothers all have deviated septums and have had the surgery but haven't had much relief. Has anyone found relief from the surgery? I'm just not sure what to do.

My boyfriend had surgery for this a few months ago. He seemed to constantly have infections and seemed to be sniffling most of the time. He says the surgery has not helped at all tho and he still seems to be experiencing the same problems.

I had the surgery for a deviated septum several years ago, and frankly found virtually no difference in my symptoms - stuffy nose, etc. While each person is unique, my experience leads me to conclude that I wouldn't have the surgery if I were doing it over.

I didn't have a septum surgery, but I was in the same boat as you, I had been on allergy shots for a year and a half, and they helped a little, but nothing miraculous. Then I went to the ENT and was told I needed a turbinate reduction. The surgery is the best thing I ever did. The following Spring, I discovered just how well my shots were actually working.

If you have allergies, sinus surgery won't do much if you aren't getting allergy shots. But if your allergy are being properly treated, the surgery can help a lot.

I had the surgery. I couldn't breathe that well before and it fixed that but I still had allergies and still had a stuffy nose. Before the surgery I definitely felt like I couldn't really breathe through my left nostril. It was pretty bad. This did not feel like typically allergy symptoms, this felt different. I could tell something was wrong. You know your body. If it feels like allergies this might not help but if it feels like something else like you really can't breathe, then surgery is probably the best option.
