Food Allergy Skin Tests - Allergies Message Board

Is it possible to be tested for food allergies...it come back normal...and it be a false reading? I have been having trouble with food lately. I have never been allergic to anything before. I get a lump in my throat and sometimes it feels itchy or swollen.

It took a couple of weeks before I could even be seen by an allergist and I lost several pounds because I was freaked about having a horrible reaction of some kind. But after the test on Tuesday, he said it had a 98% accuracy rate and that I had no food allergies and to go eat anything I wanted. He also said he thought it was hormonal related to my nerves. But today....I took a spoonful of macaroni salad from a local BBQ restaurant....and within 3 minutes my lip was itcy and I then started feeling a lump in my throat!

Am I nuts.....or could the test give a false negative reading on all these foods?

Usually the more sensitive test for food allergies is a blood test, not the skin test. But then again, do you have any other allergies? Are you aware of the reactions to certain nuts by people allergic to certain trees? There is a correlation but you don't say if you have other allergies.

Then again, it may be some additive that wasn't tested for. Or have you tried to isolate the offending food?

No I have no nut allergies either. He tested me for peanuts and tree nuts....common foods.....vegetables....fruits....meats. ...fish and shellfish. I forgot that I did have what he called a minimal reaction to cherries. Coincidentially....I have never liked cherries.

I did test positive to maple trees and mold....but those were fairly slight according to the Dr....and evidently so because I have never had itchy watery eyes, sneezing or runny nose during the spring or fall.

Sounds like it may be oral allergy syndrome. Did he mention that? You can find a lot of info on it out there and see if it might be the problem. One reason I thought of it is the itchy and swollen lips and the macaroni salad as that usually has raw fruits and veggies in it. Check it out.

He didn't mention anything about that. Just basically....you have no food allergies.....I want you to go eat. He said he felt since I have just entered that stage in life where my hormones are beginning to fluctuate that he feels it is all stress related to the fluctuations. geez! A nice way of saying your hormone challenged and flakey! LOL

I've never been an anxiety ridden indivdual or high strung. I was just very alarmed today when this suddenly happened again. And I've felt bad all afternoon...with mild dizziness and ear ringing too since the food.

Thank so much for your input....I will ****** oral allergy syndrome. I don't want to call the office up on Monday morning and have them shrug me off, since the tests were totally negative. I mean I had no redness or whelps....nothing. Only the tiny little marks where the plastic points were...and those even went away very quickly.
