Results from Allergy Testing...I need some understanding..

I went to the Allergist/Asthma doctor this morning to test for food allergies. I think it was the scratch test. They pinched me with something on my back, 8 different times. It felt very uncomfortable and I would say a little painful. They also gave me 3 different injections on my arm.

I have been diagnosed with IBS, but feel that my symptoms which are mainly gas and stomach noises would have something to do with what I'm eating. I don't have eczema, hives, rashes, etc...

The results: I think this is based on a 0-3 scale.

Histamine: 3
Coackroach: 3
Mt. Cedar: 3
Marsh Elder 2
Russian Thistle: 2
Red Root Pigweed: 2
Johnson Grass: 2
Histamine: 3

Penicillium: 2
Aleternaria: 2
Hormodenrum: 2
HouseDust Mite: 2
Histamine: 3

Citrus: 2
Histamine: 3

Mulberry: 2
Pecan: 2
Sycamore: 2
Hackberry: 2
Histamine: 3

Ragweed: 3
Giant Ragweed: 3
Histamine: 3

Shell Fish Mix: 2
Peanut: 2+

He also said that I did 36% on a breathing test, and kept asking me if I were asthmatic, if I ever get shortness of breath, etc.. I told him that I felt fine and don't have shortness of breath or chest wheezing. He then gave me an inhaler and I took one puff and did the breathing test again. This time, he said it was 100%.

I did have a slight case of asthma when I was a little girl, but then, I grew out of it. He tends to think that I still have a mild case of asthma and gave me an inhaler( albuterol sulfate).

My questions are:

Could having a slight allergic reaction to citrus, shell fish mix, and peanuts cause my stomach noises and gas?

Could I have mild case of asthma and don't know it?

Should I stay away from citrus, shell fish mix, and peanuts, even if, I don't see them causing any anaphalatic (sp) reactions? Could they be irritating the gut lining of my intestinal tract?

Should I mention these mild allergy reactions to doctors when they ask if I have any allergies?

Also, What is histamine? I kept testing positive for histamine in each section of the test.

He also said for me to keep a food diary and come back in 3 weeks to do a blood test.

Sorry so long, and thanks in advance.

Re: Results from Allergy Testing...I need some understanding..

Okay..

First most scratch and injections tests are on a 0-5 scale.. the five I have had in four different states have been anyway...

Also, What is histamine? I kept testing positive for histamine in each section of the test.

Histamine shows that you do react and can thus have a positive reaction to the exposed allergen.

My questions are:
Could having a slight allergic reaction to citrus, shell fish mix, and peanuts cause my stomach noises and gas?

Yes. Food allergies can cause gastric distress, gerd and many other gastrointestinal disorders.

Could I have mild case of asthma and don't know it?

Yes. It is possible lower than normal respiratory function can cause a depressed immune function and other side effects you just don't notice.

You should always avoid your food allergies.. nuts and shellfish especially. THe shellfish allergy is an indicator that you may be allergic to iodine.

It is important to tell your MDs about your shellfish allergy.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,
MG

Re: Results from Allergy Testing...I need some understanding..

I have both allergies and GERD. When I first did my breathing test I didn't do so well. My allergist said I may need an inhaler. When I started taking medication for GERD my breathing problems were gone and I wasn't tired all the time. I take zyrtec for my allergies and I did well on that from the beginning. It was actually my GERD that was making me feel sick most of the time.

Re: Results from Allergy Testing...I need some understanding..

Hi Tami, I went to our alternative doctor because I was allergic to all toiletries. He told me that I was probably allergic to foods too. I said "no way!". As I was driving home I was thinking "yah know, I do have reflux and my stomach does hurt all of the time, and my anus is always irritated, hmmm...". Well, I tested positive to about 85% of all the foods, inhalants and chemicals! My allergy is a contact allergy apparently. When I would garden I would get a rash from any plants touching my skin. Anyway, this doctor took away my allergies with LDA shots (low dose allergen). These are food, chemical and inhalant allergy shots. I have received three and my daughter, who was allergic to almost all food, received three also. She is eating everything now and I don't react to food or chemicals anymore (inhalants seem to be toughter to treat). I think that I would have had full-blown IBS if I wouldn't have had this intervention. We will need booster shots periodically. For some reason these shots are a well-kept secret. Most allergists have never heard of them. Oh yeah, I have always been short of breath with activities and just always thought that it was because I could probably lose a few pounds. Well, after these shots my shortness of breath decreased A LOT!
