Peanut Allergy

When I had a skin test, my skin reacted to peanuts, so the doctor says I'm allergic to peanuts. I asked him if it's okay for me to eat things that don't contain peanuts, but say on the box that it was manufactured on the same equipment as peanuts. His answer was that if I do eat it, it might be the last thing I ever eat.

His answer has me scared now, but he didn't prescribe an epi-pen. It will be difficult to avoid everything that says it was manufactured on the same equipment or might have come into contact with peanuts-- I mean, it leaves out chocolate and trips to the ice cream shop forever! Part of me is afraid & wants to be ultra careful, but part of me doesn't exactly believe it. I've eaten peanut butter and peanuts before, and never had a reaction. Does a skin test reaction mean that peanuts really could kill me?

Re: Peanut Allergy

lol, well thats funny, he is really scary, I eat things that were made at the same place as peanuts. and don't always have a problem. if you could eat peanuts before with out a problem, then I don't think you will just die. for myself I have never been able to eat ANY peanuts. as soon at it touches my toung I feel itchy. I can't even finish chewing it. the one time I did finish chewing it and ate it, I did end up in the hospital. if it is a bowl of peanuts the smell can cause a reaction of swelling and itchiness in my neck.

if I get away from it fast and treat it. I'm usually fine. if I was locked in a room with peanuts, and didn't even eat them, I think it would kill me. trust me, YOU KNOW if you have a peanut allergy. if it gets in my mouth Which happens LOTS because sometime people don’t say “may contain peanuts” or “has peanuts” especially if you buy something made at a bakery. I hate it because I can eat all nuts, just not peanuts. And I have bought cake with “nuts” but I guess they figure if they say “nuts, that also means peanuts” but it DOES NOT.

so peanuts are everywhere, you will one day come in contact, don't be so worried you are going to die. you are only stressing your self out, and you might end up living in a bubble. lol

another thing you can do is try it. you will see what is bad, can you sit by a bowl of peanuts? what if you lick peanut butter?? if you feel itchy, you need to first get it ALL OUT, I rinse my mouth with pop/Coke since it is one of the most corrosive things out there. and it works fast to destroy the peanut so I don't have to go to the hospital, I also take allergy pills.

because I know how bad my allergies are, I would NEVER eat peanuts on purpose. but I have had a baby sitter say "maybe she has grown out of it" and fed me a peanut butter sandwich" so I have been in contact with this deathly food, and I know exactly what to do, how fast to do it, and I also don't carry an eppy pen, although my doctor tells me I should.

The thing is, I think you should try it, (SAFELY) if you really don’t know, I don’t even know if you will even know if what a peanut allergy is for you. And if you don’t feel safe about trying one bite and waiting, then DON”T DO IT. but I don’t go and read the back of everything incase of peanuts. And I have never had a problem. Only once I ate something that didn’t have any peanuts and it caused a peanut allergy, but it was such a small amount, all I did was drink pop and pop a pill and I was fine. The worst is things that don’t have labels. And you can’t just avoid everything.

I think you need to know how to handle it. did your doc even tell you what level your peanut allergy is? because I did a scratch test on cats came back really bad. if my doctor knew I had a few of them, I think he would say I should be dead too. lol I have had doctors always scary me too and my mom, she will die, if this and this, people die because of this and this. And it is enough for me to get an eppy pen. But if your doc doesn’t think you need an eppy pen, then I would worry to much about dyeing.

Re: Peanut Allergy

hi. i'm allergic to the world, too! For peace of mind, ask the doctor to prescribe an epi-pen. I've been carrying one around for more than 30 years w/out ever having to use it. I'm sensitive to peanuts, too...which is what yours sounds like. So I NEVER eat a peanut that I recognize. I hope that allows me to slide by when peanuts are disguised in things. I also carry Benedryl and Alka Seltzer GOLD (not blue-that has aspirin which hurts my stomach). So if I have a reaction to something, I start with those and hope I don't end up in the ER (which the epi pen requires). bee well

Re: Peanut Allergy

Maybe get a second opinion? What symptoms were you having which caused you to go to the allergist? Did you test positive to a lot of other things too?

Re: Peanut Allergy

Hi,

Thanks for your reassurances and advice. I think I'll try a food sometime that says it was processed in the same factory, but I'll make sure I have family around at the time in case I need help.

To answer Sannah, the symptoms that caused me to go to the allergist in the first place were problems breathing. The first time it was bad, I ended up in the ER where they told me nothing was wrong with me. Then, I was misdiagnosed by my doctor as having panic attacks. So, I took it upon myself to go to the allergy & asthma specialist. I have asthma & allergies to just about everything-- environmental and food allergies. I have about 22 food allergies (skin test) and I'm doing a food challenge right now. Its so frustrating because I have such a difficult time finding foods I can eat. Even at the health food store in the allergen-free section, there's some ingredient in most of the foods I'm not supposed to have. Maybe I'm taking this all too seriously, I don't know, but I'm trying to make sure I do this food challenge right. I did have problems breathing when I ate carrots and was fine when I stopped eating them, so I know there's something to it.
