I think you may have a tree allergy. When the machine cuts the envelopes open it is releasing little particles of paper into the air. If those particles land on your hands, you may be helping to aggravate your skin.
I am allergic to just about every tree and I am fine around wooden products until something is done to release little particles. For example if I sharpen a wooden pencil, I cannot touch the shavings, if I put a piece of wooden furniture together, I cannot touch my face or arms or legs without washing my hands.
