Milk free birthday cake for 1 year old? - Allergies Message Board

Hi everyone,

My 8 month old son was seen by a pediatric allergist today, and we determined that he is highly allergic to milk (he can't have dairy or milk proteins). Myself and my husband are obviously upset about this, and one of the things that came up in conversation was his birthday cake. Has anybody ever heard of birthday cakes without milk or dairy in them? I wonder if there might anywhere that makes them with soy or something? Any ideas? I guess there's a possibility that he'll be grown out of it in 4 months, but the allergist recommended we don't give him any for a year, when we'll do more testing.

I happened to hear the authors of a vegan cookbook on the radio yesterday say that you can pretty much substitute soy milk for cow's milk in just about any recipe (and substitute vegetable oil for butter in many of them) - you might have to make it from scratch rather than buying a mix that has milk powder in it - I think any vegan cookbook would probably have a recipe you could use.

I had to substitute everything when my daughter had severe food allergies. You can actually substitute water for milk believe it or not. Oil doesn't substitute exactly for butter. The conversion is 25% less oil than butter (1 cup of oil = 1 1/4 cup of butter).
