Question Can you have allergy to popcorn?

After eatting popcorn my 7 year old broke out in hives. Is it possible to have allergy to popcorn? I took him to doctor and got benadryl and they went away. He has eatten popcorn before and this has never happend till now. It is the only food I can think of because that day it was the only thing he had eatten and then he broke out. I was wondering does this mean he can't eat corn either? Any advice would be great. thanks

Re: Can you have allergy to popcorn?

Hi neighbor! Was this microwave popcorn? Microwave popcorn can have dairy and soy in it. Corn, dairy and soy are some of the top allergens. So he has no problem with any other food? Does he have other allergy symptoms like nasal problems, eczema or stomach problems?

Re: Can you have allergy to popcorn?

You might try popping some plain popcorn, not the flavored ones in a microwave bag, the ones where you use a pan and oil. He could be allergic to corn, or to the added ingredients.

Re: Can you have allergy to popcorn?

Food allergies can appear at anytime. I am allergic to corn myself, and I didnt used to be. I discovered this in my late 30's.

IF your child is allergic to popcorn, more likely it's the corn in general. I also have issue with products high in corn syrup, corn starch, etc.

If your child is allergic to corn, I would get him/her tested, and also check for allergies to grains in general.

Exclamation Re: Can you have allergy to popcorn?

The oils used in popping can be high in palm and coconut oils, and the butter-flavor has been known to cause lung ailments in workers at plants and even for one heavy user of microwave popcorn.

I would suspect an additive rather than the corn itself.

I know I had to give up bagged microwave popcorn (not a big loss, Presto makes a great microwave popper) because something in it gave me canker sores in my mouth (I have the same problem with reeses peanut butter cups but I haven't worked out the common denominator).
