eye allergy in kids - Allergies Message Board

hi i have a 6 year old who has severe eye allergys, mainly due to pollen, sometimes they swell at night or they just itch and are sore all day, i am doing as told keeping windows shut and sunglasses and hat while out, he is on an anti histamine and allergy eye drops and steroid eye drops, this weekend he had to have a course of steroid tablets to enable him to open his eye anyone with any ideas? and does anyone know if steroid tablets could be used on a low dose throughout the summer period? i am desperate as he looks at me to make him better and i am unable to do this, the docs say there is nothing else?

You do not want him on steroids for more than a few days, not unless it's for something dangerous like asthma. Steroids aren't good for you.

Maybe he needs a different antihistamine.

If he's outside, he brings the pollen in with him in his hair, on his clothes. Any time I'm outside, especially if it's windy, I come inside, strip off my clothes and put them in the washer, take a shower and be sure to wash my hair. Also I use my nasal flush every morning, and anytime I've been in any dust/ pollen, etc. I never go to bed with that stuff all over me, or it just gets on the sheets, and even a bath won't help if it's all over my sheets.

You might consider an ENT allergy specialist, he may need tested and put on allergy drops.

am doing all that, stripping and showering, no outdoors clothes in the bedroom, keeping windows shut, but as soon as steroids wore of this morning his eyes were bad again.
did go back to doc and was given another anti hist and if this one dont work theres one more to try and i know the other advice was not to put him on steroids for the whole of the summer, but the doc did say if these two dont work they will consider as otherwise we wont be seeing the summer as we will be indoors all the time. you didnt say why you thought steroids would be bad all the time? he does get a bit hyper and aggressive but i would rather that than upset and angry.
thanks again and any other ideas would be gratefully recieved anything is worth a go.
XX p.s he is already under allergy specialist and on drops steroid and anti hist drops

The drops I'm talking about are allergy drops or shots. They are actually small bits of the thing one is allergic to, which helps build up resistance. Usually begun by having the skin scratch tests, RAST test, CAP Specific IgE or other type of blood test to determine the specific foods and inhalants causing the problems.
