Been Suffering From Allergies For Year's And I Don't Know Whats Causing It???

I cannot figure out why my nose is always running and I always feel stuffed up.I take Benadryl but this year it does not seem to work like in prior year's.the only thing I can think of is I have a Siberian husky who is almost 10 year's old now and a 3 month year old German Shepard puppy.I am with the dogs constantly but I get allergies just walking outside in the air.The only other thing is I eat alot of peanut butter and I heard that this can cause some allergic reactions in patient's.Instead of taking 2 benadryl tablets I usually take another tablet an hour or 2 later. Also when I sit out in the sun for a long time I get terrible allergies.Sometime's it feels like a cold but my sister also has allergies.I have no idea what Im allergic to but I am going to have to find out because it interfere's with working out and is a nuisance.Maybe I need something different then Benadryl. My sister says she's allergic to dog's but if I am, I could not live without my 2 dogs.It was 90 degree's today and my nose was running like a faucet.I would hate to take medicine for these allergies because I take other medicine for totally different reasons.I was wondering what is more common, the allergies to dog's,dust or peanut butter

Re: Been Suffering From Allergies For Year's And I Don't Know Whats Causing It???

Food allergies (like allergies to peanut butter) don't usually cause symptoms like a runny nose - they cause things like tingling of the lips, itchy skin around your mouth, nausea and, in severe cases, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing and anaphylaxis (systemic inflammation of tissues throughout the body that can be life-threatening).

All of that to say that peanut butter is probably not the cause of the symptoms you describe.

The easiest solution would be to find an allergist and get tested so you can find out exactly what you're allergic to (and be prepared for the possibility that you're allergic to dogs).

You might also consider taking something other than Benadryl. Zyrtec (or the generic version cetirizine) is available without a prescription, works for 24 hours at a time, and typically works better at controlling allergies if you take it every day.

If you have ongoing allergies it's really important that you take an antihistamine daily to keep them under control - once the allergic reaction starts it's harder to control it (although Benadryl works well at slowing down an allergic reaction once it starts, it's not the best for managing ongoing allergies because it's short acting).

Yeah i wouldn't be surprised if it was my dogs.Maybe Zyrtec may help me better because I have to live with my 2 dogs.

I think the obvious answer is to visit an allergist and see what you're allergic to.

Keep in mind that allergies come and go.

I would DEFINITELY go see an allergist before buying anymore medicine.

I moved to a new location, and got myself checked - guess what - developed a NEW allergy to LONG HAIRED dogs - so you just never know!

Re: Been Suffering From Allergies For Year's And I Don't Know Whats Causing It???

I have allergy for over 20 years and I used to have both cat and dog. At last I went to see a specialist at Stanford clinic, and the appointment took 6 month. They did allergy test on me, I was told that I am allergic to all the trees and grass in California, also dog, cat, and dust. I now live in France, still cannot live without medication but the one I brought over from US doesn't work here, I need to buy the French allergy medicine for it. My Doctor told me that the allergy will lessens when one gets older. I now over 50, still suffering with allergy. I believe I also have hidden food allergy that I don't know about. One thing for sure, by exercise a lot and build a strong immunity works better than any typed medicine
