Benadryl,Zrtec for Allergies ??

I have severe allergies.I may be allergic to my 2 dogs but I got other allergies too. After many years of using Benadryl with some sucess I tried this Zrtec which is a grape tasting chewable kind.It didn't help me one bit with allergies.I have tried Allegra in the past also.Im just thinking of going out and getting some Benadryl. There does seem to be some unpleasant affects with Benadryl but I think I have no choice.Anyone like Benadryl better then the very costly Zrtec or any other Allergy Med??

Re: Benadryl,Zrtec for Allergies ??

For most people Zyrtec works really well but you have to understand how it's different from Benadryl. Benadryl is great because it is fact acting and very powerful but only lasts for 4-6 hours and tends to make people very drowsy.

Zyrtec works for 24 hours at a time but tends to work better if you take it every day. You should also check the dosage on the Zyrtec you're taking - the normal daily does for adults is 10 mg, but some of the chewables are only half that dose (so you may not be getting a full dose).

There are generic versions of Zyrtec available (Costco sells one called Allertec that contains Cetirizine, the active ingredient in Zyrtec, and only costs $15.00 for 300 tablets).
