Feel like my head will explode! Is this really allergies?

Hi guys, I posted previously with a question about allergy shots. I'm back because despite taking Zyrtec, Flonase, and allergy shots, I'm still miserable! When I started the shots in October I felt a decease in symptoms through december,so I thought that they must have been the missing piece of my allergy puzzle. Then I missed some shots due to illness in December and when I restarted in January everything went downhill. The day after my evening shots, I awoke to head pressure, ear pressure, headache, etc. My allergist is telling me that an allergy attack is not a reaction from the shots. I have reacted to the shots previously, anaphylactic reactions that were mild. I have no more anaphylactic reactions, but its clear that I do react. So I took the prednisone that mr. Allergist Rx'd (40mg/5days) to calm the swelling in my nasal passages/sinuses and experienced minimal relief. I have then been put on augmentin because of increasing facial pain, which led my dr to suspect sinusitis. I don't expect the augmentin to change much, but am trying it because I'm afraid my head and left ear will explode otherwise. What the heck is going on? I'm new to this allergy thing- it started with my pregnancies and escalated in the years following. Is this some kind of allergy attack?
Symptoms:
-ear pressure left side only no infection ear looks perfect
-head pressure/headaches
-fatigue
-brain fog (head literally feels like there's thick fog sitting in there preventing thinking straight)
As a final note: this happened to me exactly this time last year, only I wasn't on allergy therapy. It led to my Eustachian tubes become completely blocked. I had a surgery to correct this in June (not tubes), and was doing great ear wise till September ragweed season hit. Then I started immunotherapy and it seemed to get better. I was fine by thanksgiving. Then this relapse.
I'm able to pop both my ears just fine, and Eustachian tube function testing is normal according to 2 audiologists.
Why is this feeling persisting? I just don't feel like myself. Can allergy attacks last 3 weeks? Anyone experience similar symptoms with their year round allergies? Seriously we just scrubbed the house down (allergic big time to molds/dust mites). It's frozen out here in Chicagoland! This makes no sense!

It sounds like you are dealing with some chronic sinus problems. Have you had a CT of your sinuses to confirm?

It does take a while to see relief of allergy symptoms from the shots. I'm in my second go-round with immunotherapy and I tend to see significant changes at about the 1 year mark.

As for your current symptoms, there are other things that they can be attributed to as well. It may sound way out there, but check out the TMJ symptom sticky at the top of the TMJ board. Your ear pressure, headaches and fatigue are on there as well.

I have bad allergies and sinus problems. I had an ear that was constantly stuffy and my ENT and Audiologist said tests kept coming back normal. Turned out I have TMJD as well.

Hi mountainreader,
Yes, I've had a coronal ct scan which ruled out sinus disease. The sinus specialist I saw accredited all my current complaints to allergies. I have heard tmj as a possibility before, but didn't think much of it. My jaw deviates slightly to the right when I open my mouth, but I have no jaw pain. I might need to explore this tmj path soon though, because all my audiology tests are coming back normal. I find myself repeatedly popping my ears all day, but it doesn't change the pressure feeling. My primary care dr is obsessed with it being Eustachian tube dysfunction, an ent was the one who mentioned tmj to me. Because my primary dr has to refer me to a specialist (crap insurance), I need to 'prove' to him that its not my Eustachian tubes. I had one Eustachian tube function test done a couple weeks ago that was normal, and am getting another one done tomorrow because I need to move on from ETD if that's not the problem, and get a referral elsewhere. If this test is normal again, I don't see how it could be my Eustachian tubes swelling as a result of allergies, at least not at this time, because I'm passing the tests. I have already contacted the supervisor of the medical group to which my dr belongs to make them aware if this issue with my dr. He blatantly ignores the problem, tells me it'll go away on its own, it's no big deal, no need to see anyone else. The problem is, there IS a problem. If I pass this test tomorrow, ill be forwarding the results to this supervisor, so she can figure out why my dr ignores test results. Grrrrr! Just need to figure this out!

Re: Feel like my head will explode! Is this really allergies?

I have an awesome ENT. I went to him several times when I first started having issues. He did scopes and I even had a brain MRI at one point. Nothing showed up. I was so miserable that he even offered to put tubes in my ear if I wanted to see if it would help. I declined, but was thankful he was trying.

I get your frustration though.

Unfortunately TMJ issues aren't covered by my medical or dental insurance, as is common, so it was a very slow process for getting diagnosed and treated because I kept having to try to save $ for each next step. :(

Good luck at your appointment.
