Drug Allergy testing
My doctor is pressing me to have testing for penicillin allergy. I had anaphlaxis in my teens from it and am now 67. I have problems with many other antibiotics that have developed over the years. He really feels his hands are tied should I have an infection and right now I'm having some salivary gland swelling that he feels will go away in time - could be several weeks - but would be much quicker and less painful for me if I could even take keflex.
So, my question is have any of you had testing for a drug allergy and how scary was it? he wants to do like a scratch test with it and, if that's normal, then give me a very low dose. What do you think? I do realize that I am now very limited should I get an infection that really needs an antibiotic. I probably need to do this but am just very concerned. He says that about 80-90% of people who were allergic to penicillin as a child no longer are as an older adult.
