unknown allergy?

I've come to my ropes end I believe and I don't know what to ask/request of my doctors next.

On March 25 I started getting hives. EVERYWHERE. I did also start a new job that day.

I have had hives almost every day since.

I went to the ER twice because along with the hives my lips swelled once and twice I had a bump in the center of my forehead. Almost like those sinuses were swelled up. Looked like I bumped my head but I didn't. Both times the ER gave me steroids and hydroxyzine along with two shots while I was there. As soon as the script for the steroids is done, the hives come back.

The allergist (been there twice so far) tried something called xyzal or something. Didn't work. He basically has me taking antihistamines every day and double the dose. He said I can choose if I want it to be zyrtec, claritin, allegra, etc. Also benadryl at night.

Nothing is working. The benadryl helps at night sometimes. But they ALWAYS come back. He ordered blood work for allergies but I haven't received the results yet. He keeps telling me they will just go away eventually.

The most disconcerting symptom is the bump that swells in the middle of my forehead. This has happened about 5 or 6 times now. No one seems to be too concerned about it. I am EXTREMELY concerned about this. The hives are annoying yes, but they are what they are. The bump? This freaks me out.

My last ditch effort was seeing my PCP. He doesn't want me on steroids anymore. He believes I have a sinus infection and I'm not taking antibiotics. I had no symptoms at all the first four days of those but now the hives are slowly creeping back and the bump on my head is back.

Nothing changed. Not soaps, laundry, nothing. I have never been allergic to anything. The only thing that changed was my new job but it's been OVER six weeks now and no relief.

I know a diagnosis can't be given over the internet, but any ideas or advice would be much appreciated. Such as what to ask for next or suggest of my doctors, what I'm missing, etc.

Re: unknown allergy?

If you have no sinus infection symptoms, I would ask for some blood tests related to thyroid and autoimmune disorders if nothing shows up on your allergy tests. Hives like this, and the swelling in forehead, can be associated with lupus. Hives can also accompany autoimmune thyroiditis, Hashimotos. If the swelling is accompanied by sinus infection symptoms, you should have a CT scan of sinuses done. Since this started, have you felt ok otherwise? Any other symptoms you haven't mentioned?> Any autoimmune disorders in family history? Sun sensitivity? Hair loss, fatigue, joint pains?

Re: unknown allergy?

Are you on any meds - prescription or otherwise? I ask because the welt on the face is indicative of some allergies I've had to NSAIDs. I took Aleve for years with no problems and then began having the face issue. Allergist said it was the Aleve and so quit it. Welts went away. Now I've been on Meloxicam for a number of years and it's beginning again. Not as bad as before but still hugely annoying and make me look awful. I guess I may have to eventually quit it as well....

Re: unknown allergy?

The blood tests for the allergies included other tests...i know they tested the thyroid. And some other stuff too. No autoimmune disorders in the family. And other then the hives, i've had some sinus infection type symptoms but not all of them. Mainly tightness and pressure in the forhead and around the eyes and nose and sinus type headaches.

I take no meds on a regular basis. I do take NSAIDs sometimes because I Have chiari that causes neck pain and headaches...but i don't take it nearly every day.

The swelling in the forehead isn't rash like like the hives. It literally looks like i bumped my head slightly. i LOOKS like those sinuses are swelling...bu ti have no idea if you can usually SEE swollen sinuses.

Re: unknown allergy?

I would be sure to get antithyroid antibodies done and an ANA. It is likely they tested your thyroid hormone levels but not antibodies. The forehead swelling could be panniculitis, one of the skin manifestations of lupus, along with hives with unknown etiology. You can research hives and Hashimotos and hives and lupus and panniculitis pictures.

I had the ANA test done. Negative. But I just got more bloodwork done ordered by the dermatologist and antithyroid was one of the things they are testing.

for now i decided to try a natural approach with taking quercatin, vitamin c and omega 3.

we will see. sigh.
