Hi logden,
Yes, this licorice should help with reflux. But, it also has some rather severe thinning effects on the blood, so if you have ANY issues, at all, with bleeding, or ulcers, the heart, you will want to avoid using it. Also, it is not a drug (herb) that can be taken for extended periods of time. I don't remember all the implications, but do remember its not the best choice for most people.
I'm not familiar with the gum you mentioned, so can't address that. There are options, though, instead of the licorice. Swedish bitters (available in alot of grocery stores) works well taken BEFORE a meal, as does just about ANY green leafy, slightly bitter, vegies. For instance, chew a leaf off a bunch of broccoli or cauliflower, arugula, dandelion, or other baby-leaf salad blends. Just about anything that is bitter will work. These work by stimulating the digestive juices BEFORE the food hits the stomach so that digestion can begin. With reflux, the acid generally hits the stomach AFTER you've eaten, which is what usually causes the problem.
None of these suggestions SHOULD have ANY adverse effects on you and your health.
