Post Ativan and herbs/Vitamins

Question:
I take Ativan from time to time for GAD and panic disorder. I also take Vitamin b complex, powdered Vitamin C, Vitamin E. I would also like to take Milk Thistle for liver function and herbs for the anxiety/panic. Does anyone have information as to the herb/Vitamin reaction with Ativan or drugs in the same class?

As far as I know, you are safe with taking Milk Thistle for your liver. This is safe and does not have any interactions as far as I know.

As far as other interactions go and am not sure and it would depend on what other herbs you are thinking of taking for anxiety? The most common being Valerian?

I am not sure, so maybe others could help better here.

Good luck

As for Herbs, I was thinking about Passionflower. I have heard mixed reactions about kava kava so I'm steering clear of that. My strongest and most constant symptoms are:

Chest pounding (always feeling my heartbeat)
Dizziness
Full feeling in my chest

I have seen in other posts that it depends what type of anxiety disorder you have depends on what herbs are right for you. Any ideas?

Yes, I think it probably does to a certain extent, but then in herbal medicine I think there are general sets of herbs that are known to be good for anxiety and the like, so I think if you went to see a herbalist, they would probably give you a mixture of about 5 or 6 herbs to take as a herbal tincture to help you on an all round basis.

However, having said that, I do not really know that much about herbs. My specialist area is really homeopathy.

Unless you really want to stick with the herbs, have you ever considered homeopathic treatment at all? It is worth considering, as with homeopathy you do not have to consider any drug interactions at all, as there aren't any, which is a bonus.

Good luck

I apologize if I sound naive, but is homeopathy the same as a naturopath. Can you give me a brief synopsis as to what you actually practice or what the difference is? I greatly appreciate it.

Ok, basically, both homeopathy and herbal medicine are part of naturopathy as they are natural.

Herbs are taken in a crude form in a tincture and actually have a physical effect on the body, which is why you have to be careful with drug interactions.

Homeopathic remedies however come from plants, animal and mineral sources and are given in tablet form, but rather than containing the crude substance, they are given in potentised form. This means that the substance is ground down and dissolved in a water and alcohol solution and then the substance is further diluted, but is also succussed or shaken and this equals potentisation. This is why there are no drug interactions with homeopathy.

Homeopathy works on the principle of 'Like Cures Like' and the minute substance will help strengthen your immune system and stimulate the natural healing process of your body. It works more with the energy of your body too.

I don't know whether you already have an ND at all, but if not, then an ND (Naturopathic Doc) should practice herbal medicine and homeopathy and could tell you more and also decide which treatment would be more effective for you. They also practice acupuncture too?

No, unfortunately I do not. I relocated last year from NJ to VA and the options down here are much less for Holistic medicine meaning I would have to drive an hour or so.

I'm just venting here but I feel that it is a shame that insurance doesn’t cover as much as they should. I could go on about that but I'm sure you understand that issue.

Thank you for your help, it is greatly appreciated.
