Question magnesium supplementation

I am so confused!!
I have read so many different things about magnesium supplements...
From "ionic" to "Chelated", liquid to tablet, time-released vs not....

Does anyone know the best way to get absorption from a magnesium supplement? I hear spreading it out throughout the day, etc.

Plus, do you HAVE to take Calcium with magnesium or can you just take magnesium? ( I think you should take mag if you are taking calc, but can you take mag without calc?)

Thanks for your help.

Magnesium Citrate is the best for absorption. Always take Mag with Calcium or the calcium will be leached from your bone tissue. I take NSI Calcium & Magnesium - 240 Caps, available for $14.95 through a popular online discount vitamin store. I sleep much better at night when I take it before bed.

I do not agree with the previous poster.
Most magnesium is stored in the bones. The type of magesium that is absorbed without the digestion doing much to it is the chelated type that is attached to a protein amino acid like glycine or lycine.

The process is patented by Albion Labs in Utah and is produced by several companies in the US. --- Doctors Best, Solgar, Kal, Carlson and other vitamin companies.

It has been found that magnesium is absorbed better if taken spead out like 3 times daily. If it is taken in a single dose the absorption is less than 14% but the absorption goes to almost 40% when taken 3 times daily.

We in the US get alot of calcium in foods and dairy products but it is estimated that 70% are deficient in magnesium.

You really need magnesium along with vitamin D to absorb calcium best. The relation should be 2 parts calcium to 1 part magnesium.

Other forms of magnesium are aborbed pretty well but the organic type is the best. Aspartates, oratates, citrates, oxides are all good.

If you think you lack magnesium at the cell level --the most sensitive test is called an intracellular (mononuclear cell) magnesium screen. It is more sensitive than the normal blood serum test that is usually performed.
