Off coffee....bad headaches

I just recently stopped drinking coffee and now I have pounding headaches every morning that last until about 2 or 3. It doesn't affect me at work, but it's just an annoyance to have. Anyone know of any ways to get rid of headaches naturally (I'm sick of popping pills) or any other drinks that could take the place of coffee that's better for you?

Why not wean off caffeine gradually instead of cold turkey?

Re: Off coffee....bad headaches

I also stopped coffee. I would not only get horrible headaches, but would wake up nauseous. I used Tylenol which helped. I also used Benadry because I think I also had an allergy to the coffee which was what made me feel so bad. I tried going back on coffee because I craved it so much. I would say to myself, "I'll just have one cup." But, I never could stop at the one cup. I did this for a long time and finally decided that I felt so much better off it that I completely went off and feel so much better. I have never gone back to it because I now know it isn't for me. I will drink tea sometimes without caffeine. I do not drink any pops and anything with aspartame or additives. I stick with filtered water which is better for us anyhow. Hope this helps.

Bear with the headaches, they will eventually go. Also, make sure you're drinking enough water.

ABSOLUTELY!! A cup of green tea contains enough caffiene that it will prevent withdrawl headaches. Unless you have super major issues with caffiene, a couple cups a day won't hurt you. Besides, if you research what the negative side effects of caffiene are, you will find that the constituents of green tea are counter active to any detrimental effects caused by the caffiene itself.

Equally as important is drinking PLENTY of water.

Yah, did you drink a lot of coffee throughout the day? I would switch to green tea like the other poster said cause it's a very healthy drink.

I'd say your going through caffeine withdrawl, happens to my dad as well if he goes a few days without soda or coffee

Re: Off coffee....bad headaches

Along with the headaches I had a fluish feeling and was extemely tired that lasted several weeks. It took awhile to go awhile but now I feel so free, not having the dependency.
I drink yerba mate tea in the mornings now. It has a slight amount of caffine ( like green tea), many minerals, and is soothing to my stomach. I like it with soy milk and some natural maple syrup to sweeten it.

Re: Off coffee....bad headaches

I grew up in South America and have always been a heavy coffee drinker. I used to drink it daily from about 7am till 10pm. At the advice of my doctor, I have cut way back on coffee. When I cut back, the first 2 to 3 days were a nightmare.....terrible headaches, problems concentrating at work. But gradually things got better and better. Now I have one large cup of coffee in the morning on the way to work (brewed 1/2 regular and 1/2 decaf) and the rest of the day I stick to decaf. I don't know that I'll ever switch to 100% decaf but I'm pleased with where I'm at and my doctor says I'm in pretty good shape. Now the decaf I buy is the really good stuff roasted locally at my favorite coffee shop, so it tastes as good as the regular stuff I'm used to. I'll cut back on caffeine but I'm not willing to compromise on flavor!

Re: Off coffee....bad headaches

The headaches only last for a week or so and then they will be gone, I just went cold turkey here a couple months ago and found I feel better mentally and physically now without it, but I do love coffee and I know I will drink a starbucks once in awhile just not daily anymore.

Re: Off coffee....bad headaches

This might sounds dumb, but why did you go off of coffee????? Was it affecting your health?

Coffee is one vice I won't give up. If a doc tells me I have to give up coffee or die, I'll say "oh well, we all gotta go sometime". Har har. Anyway, I limit myself to two cups a day and that works for me. I cut down to a single cappuccino instead of a double. But I sure love my coffee.

Re: Off coffee....bad headaches

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I decided to go cold turkey because if I didn't, it wouldn't get done. I either do something or not. I'm feeling a lot better now...headaches have subsided a lot. I've been drinking lots of water throughout the day and have green tea every once in a while. I'll have one coffee on Sunday when reading the paper...it's my ritual.

Re: Off coffee....bad headaches

Coffee contains ANTIOXIDENTS the japanese just completed a study that says people who drink at least one cup of coffee per day are half as likely to develop liver cancer. It seems that the risk go's down further the more coffee you drink. sorry to say they did not study decalf.
