Natural Remedies for PMS Please?

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share something with you all about PMS, for me living with PMS is extremely hard, I mean a week and a half before my period comes, I feel horrible and am in such a horrendous mood, I mean I feel so depressed, cry everyday, so stressed and extremely mad at everyone, everything people do bothers me

but after my period comes, I feel so happy, and the next day after my period I am a totally happier person! in a great mood, I mean this PMS thing is very hard to deal with, aside from having a thyroid condition which is also hard to cope with this PMS is by far the worst condition to control, is there anything natural remedies that can be taken for this condition? I mean I wont tak eany anti depressants because I have tried many with no help, I have to find a solution for this I mean, I need to take something at least 2 weeks before it gets here before I drive everyone crazy.

Re: Natural Remedies for PMS Please?

I was having symptoms similar to yours maybe not quite as severe. But mine got to be all month off and on instead of just a week and a half! It sounds like to me you have a hormonal imbalance which is very common in women. I found a doctor/pharmacist who is knowledgable about women's hormones. She had me perform a saliva test, which is very easy to do. If you go online and do a search on saliva tests, you will get a lot of information. My test results showed that I actually was a little high in estrogen and very low in progesterone. She is very evident in perimenopause or the "PMS" years! I am not using a natural progesterone cream. I have used it in the past, but found out the amount I was using was less than half of what I should be using. Find a doctor who understands saliva testing in your area. I am sure that all you need is some balance. Good luck!

Re: Natural Remedies for PMS Please?

I also suffer from bad pms, and have since I was about 15. I have done a bit of research on supplements, and here is what helps me: flaxseed (you can take oil capsules, or consume ground flax--just follow the directions on the package) eating healthier--I said healthier-not perfect!!! I cut out alot of sugar, drink only water, I try to basically eat natural-a little meats (organic if possible to eliminate hormones in the meat) fruit, fresh and frozen veggies, and I limit dairy, tons. Dairy is very congesting (thickens mucous) and contains lots of hormones.

I do get a treat-sometimes every day but I try to make sure the majority of what I eat is good for me. Water flushes out the system. Ive been researching this for years and find these things over time have alleviated my symptoms by about 70 percent. I was moody, broke out, got bloated, cravings, you name it! It is now tolerable, and easy to deal with. I feel pretty good. Most of what i listed will help your body to better eliminate excess hormones, which cause the majority of pms symptoms. the more efficiently your body functions, the fewer symptoms you can have. I also try to exercise more, but i dont have a strict workout routine. Just little things throughout my day. You can do alot of research on the web about natural ways to deal with the hormonal imbalance that causes your symptoms. There are lots of little things youc an do to tweak your body into behaving better. I found what worked for me thru trial and error, over the course of several years. I know it sounds like alot but I feel good despite the fact that I cant just go crazy and eat ice cream all the time and mcdonalds. That stuff makes me feel like crap in the end.

Has anyone tried agnus castus and EFA (essential fatty acids)? These are meant to be good at balancing hormones and helping PMS and irregular periods. Im taking it but Ive only just started taking it so haven't seen any effect yet.

Flax, the first thing I listed is an EFA. I think efas are a huge part of dealing with pms. They are anti-inflammatory and help immensely with hormonal issues. You can try flax( that is my favorite) fish or evening primrose oil. You could also get a mix of flax and fish oils, but I dont like capsules. I like ground flax because you get the fiber and lignans.

Re: Natural Remedies for PMS Please?

Be careful with the flax if you have a thyroid problem. Flax can have negative affects in people with thyroid problems. A book by Ann Louise Gittleman Phd called "Before the change" helped me bunches. I had many of the same symptoms you do. I did a lot of the things HillaryB did plus I added flax oil, evening primrose oil, a basic multi, Vit E, Vit C, Calcium, Magnesium, and a B-complex. It took about 2 months before I noticed a big change. My period slipped up on me with no moodiness, depression, bloating, or breast tenderness. I even had less cramping.

Soy products like tofu or soy milk help ease off the problems of PMS. Also foods with live active cultures in them like yogurt. Flax seeds was good advise.

Re: Natural Remedies for PMS Please?

i heard good and bad about soy, though mostly good. It contains phytoestrogen, which is a very low level that tricks the body into producing less?? Something like that. I never really got into soy. I do think that the more crap in your body, the harder time it has escorting out the excess hormones caused by pms. So the cleaner you eat, the better you feel. that goes for all aspects of your health, not just hormonal.

Re: Natural Remedies for PMS Please?

These all sound like great ideas, much better than anything radical like antidepressants and such, after all, PMS is not a "mental disorder"(PMDD) although the psychiatric and drug communities would like people to think that to sell the drugs.

I'm 48 years old and really never had a whole lot of trouble with PMS nor do I seem to really be in perimenopause just yet, for my age I guess it might be part luck or genetics, or I'm doing something right?

I try to eat healthy, but I'm not perfect(have a weakness for sweets) I don't drink alcohol at all and stay away from artificial fats and sweetners whenever I can...some chemicals can mess things up in the body. So naturally, I don't do any drugs nor smoke. I don't even take tylenol anymore, although I feel it is safe as directed, I just like to work through my own headaches.

I religiously go to the gym 4-5 times and lift weights to build some muscle, with some cardio and stretching at the end. My GYN mentioned vigorous exercise is proven in studies to help with PMS.

Well, I'm not going to workout too hard to hurt myself at this age, but I believe us gals shouldn't be intimidated by a bit more weight on the machines or dumbells as long as we don't hurt ourselves.

Re: Natural Remedies for PMS Please?

Wow, I could have written this post myself! My PMS is sometimes unbearable. I get horribly depressed and sometimes even get suicidal thoughts, which by now I know will go away as soon as I get my period. Also, my breasts and my entire lower abdomen area hurts for days before my period and once I get it, the cramps are simply excruciating. I have to take painkillers every few hours for the first two days of menstruation or I would be writhing in pain. I've taken every supplement on earth, including vitamins and evening primorose oil, with no effect. I also have a mild hyperthyroidism, not even severe enough to take medication, but maybe it plays a part in my hormonal imbalance? I don't eat much meat, in fact I was a vegetarian for a couple of years and now I only eat fish and seafood, and occasionally chicken, but still no improvement in my PMS. At least it's good to know I'm not the only one dealing with this ordeal. Forgot to mention, my only vice is coffee, only one or two cups a day (and lately I probably drink too much wine but it relaxes me), but I had these terrible PMS symptoms and cramps even before I drank coffee, so I don't know... Any more ideas how to get better? My gyno just told me to keep taking painkillers and she wanted me to take antidepressant (equivalent of Prozac and made by the same company, but forgot the name. Serafem maybe?), but I don't want to just mask the symptoms, I want to get rid of them.

I hope the painkillers you take are OTC like tylenol.....prescription pain killers are narcotic depressants and can cause depression or worsen any existing depression!

Sarafem is Prozac, and I know it's the "thing" these days but my GYN doesn't believe in them for PMS; instead, she recommends the exercise. My own daughter had a terrible time with cramps but she noticed if she exercised, especially situps, the cramping would get better.

Re: Natural Remedies for PMS Please?

Hi, yes, the painkillers I take are OTC Advil or Tylenol. My GYN wrote me a prescription for the stronger ones, but thankfully, I decided not to take them. I'm glad i didn't now that you told me how harmful they can be.

I am physically active, mainly walking a lot and doing stretches every day, but not any intense exercise. Do you need to do cardio workouts to get the cramp reducing benefits? What else could help for the hormone related depression? Please give me some suggestions, I've been crying on and off all day, and it happens almost every month before I get my period. Thank you so much.

Yes, definately cardio but my daughter got alot of relief also from stomach exericises like curls (half-situps) and some weight training. As far as depression, the exercise should help but also I've heard good things about fish oil for depression...eating fish or taking the oil. I think all Omega 3 foods/oils help.

Walking and stretching is very good, they are part of a well-rounded routine, just add some weight resistance and cardio a few times a week and there you go!
