Alternative Treatment for Schizophrenia?

I don't have have Schizophrenia, but I know some people that do. Prescription drugs such as Chlozaril has helped these people some. Though, it's a very strong drug and can have some bad side effects. Some of the people that take it are almost like zombies. They don't show much emotion or expression at all. I've heard alot about natural supplements, herbs, etc. for things such as depression and anxiety, but I have never heard about any natural supplements, herbs, etc. for Schizophrenia. Is there such a thing?

Older antipsychotics may have that zombifying effect but the newer atypical antipsychotics like Risperdal and Abilify are supposed to be better and you get to keep more of the original personality of the person still. I don't think there is any kind of alternative medicine for schizophrenia specificially but you can try high dose fish oil supplements.

Re: Alternative Treatment for Schizophrenia?

Unfortunately, both the illness itself and the medications can cause the lack of emotion, but the newer medications are less likely to cause that problem.

For alternative treatment of schizophrenia, look up orthomolecular treatment on your web browser. It involves vitamins and dietary changes. Also some people have allergies to something else they may be exposed to, for instance, some people become psychotic when they are exposed to exhaust fumes. About 5% of people with schizophrenia can become well by avoiding some food item that they are allergic to; gluten and milk products are the two most common, but it can be anything. The symptoms go away after 4 or 5 days of avoiding the food item completely. Sometimes it is more than one food item. Niacin or niacinamide and vitamin C are the two most important vitamins but there are others. Sometimes people using orthomolecular methods can be well without meds, and sometimes they use meds along with the vitamins to acheive a higher level of wellness than they can find on meds alone. You can get a lot of information about it online. Some sites will tell you that orthomolecular treatment does not work, but I know a woman who's 16 year old son, who began to have symptoms (hearing voices) as a very young child, and he does well with the orthomolecular treatment with no meds most of the time, so I know it does work for some people.

Re: Alternative Treatment for Schizophrenia?

on abc news i heard about a new treatment for depression and schizophrenia called transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS. it involves applying powerful electromagnets to the skull. the procedure isn't effective for everyone, but it's worth looking into.

Re: Alternative Treatment for Schizophrenia?

I don't knowof an alternative treatment, but I wanted to mention that I take Risperdal and learned that it, along with other anti-psychotics depletes the body of magnesium, which can result in permanent facial ticks and sleep disorders. I kept waking up every night and couldn't get back to sleep, so I started taking powdered magnesium and started sleeping through the night again.
