Milk Thistle

Although we know there are no side effects from taking herbs, I am wondering if anyone has ever experience adverse effects when taking Milk Thistle in liquid form? Appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Each morning I take a green powder supplement with juice and to this I add Milk Thistle Extract, Green Tea Extract, Garlic Extract, Fish Oil, Flax Oil and Aloe Vera. No adverse side effects.

That's not true that there aren't ever any side effects from taking herbs. Hers can still have side effects.

Milk Thistle can and does affect Liver enzymes. If you are healthy this is of little consequence if you have liver disease it will confuse your medical doctor if diagnosed and if its undiagnosed {hepatitis C for example] you could have some real problems.
It is safe in most cases and liver values return to normal reasonably quickly after stopping.

Thanks Dr. Scott,
Are you a chiropractor?

If I start a thread concerning some chiropractic questions, would you be able to answer them?

Since most drugs are derived from plants in the first place(unless synthetic)needless to say any drug or herb can have potential side effects. Herbs are not without their side effects and some can have life threatening events just like the conventional drugs that are derived from them. Many people have ended up in the ER from taking herbs because they thought that since it is plant it can't harm you and found out the hard way.

Too much of certain thing aren't good for example ( CATS CLAW ) it is a very strong natural antiviral and immune boosting herbal supplement ( BUT) if taken too much or you're body doesn't need it it can lay in you're system and become toxic .
If you take you're supplements ( WITHIN REASON ) and you do have a certain probem you realy should talk to some 1 who has experiance in that field and also you're doctor because some herbal supplement may or may not agree with due to allergic reactions or just over doing it with them or even if you're on a certain medication .
I am a very strong believer in holistic and natural healing but they need to be taken with responsibility and also caution and knowledge .

Re: Milk Thistle

I'm not sure why this happened, but I started taking milk thistle and my blood pressure went up (140/90). After I quit taking it, my blood pressure went back to normal (120/78). I'm not sure if it was the milk thistle or that I have a hard time taking any medicine (herbal or otherwise). I can't even take vitamins without a reaction. So I think it's just my body, not the milk thistle itself.

Sounds like an adverse reaction, you could put it to the test again and see if it does the same thing. Adverse reactions occur with any drug, natural or conventional, a drug is a drug. Milk Thistle is used to purify the liver or so it claims, some people take it without any problems. I'd give it another test run just to prove it to myself.
