I am wonderinf those of you who take fish oil daily- how much to you take?
I am taking 5 capsules daily with a protein based meal for digestion- does that seem like enough/ if you take spoons= how many tsp/TS to do take. How do you feel from taking it- any difference over time?
When I had anxiety and depression I took up to 2 capsules of 1200mg high potency capsules per meal a day. Now that my anxiety and depression is gone I do 1 capsule per meal.

Hi, I take Carlson's fish oil which a serving size equals a teaspoon. There are 800mg of EPA
500mg of DHA
Other omega 3's = 300mg
My hair is really shiney, my memory is better, my skin is better, and I used to have pain in my shin from running that didn't go away for a long time, but then after I started supplementing with fish oil, like a week later, it was gone. You made a good choice since epa and dha are important aspects of a healthy diet!
I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression 10 months ago..I finally found the genetic link in my family. I have celtic irish ancestry, as well as some scottish, and scandinavian. My ancestors had rich diets in Omega 3 oils. I have taken them for 3 days and noticed a difference in that my thoughts are not as obsessive and my fears are going away. My uncle and aunt are on meds for this, but i think we're predisposed due to our ancestry. An omega 3 deficiency is a major problem for people with that have past relatives that lived in Northern Europe. FRANK, how long were you taking the 2 capsules for? That's what I'm taking now, 6 a day with meals..

That is facinating! i'm 1/4 Norwiegan and have Scottish and Welsh Ancestors also. I think my Omega-3 deficiency is showing ups as allergies/chronic inflammmation. Do you know what causes it? I take flaxseed instead of fish oil, but now your post has me wondering if my body is incapable of converting it to Omega-3's. Maybe I would be better of with fish oil.

I actually started off with the pour bottle version which is better because of the higher dosage and more economical but the bottle was inconvenient to take out of the home and tougher to take because of the taste so I went with the capsules after I used up the first bottle. The way I've been doing it is by taking 2 capsules of Nordic Naturals "Ultimate Omega" brand fish oil per meal for about a year daily while my Depression/Anxiety/OCD was at it's peak. Now that I've made a decent recovery I continue on a daily maintainence regimen of 1 capsule per day and have been doing so for 6 months or so. I find that once I stop the fish oil supplements for more than 3 or 4 days I start going down hill a bit so I just stay on the oil and go off them over the weekend and start up again on Monday.
You're right!! Start taking the fish oil. I actually saw norwegian fish oil at Whole foods the other day. I don't know if our ancestors ate flax seed. Definitely make the switch...
I have read that one should take at least a gram of the oil per day if not more. How many capsules woul equal a gram? I use the Metagentics Fish oil in capsules and take 5 a day. I have not felt anything different and it has been at least a few weeks But I know it works and I am being patient to see results, either moods or hair and skin.
Any suggestions?

One gram equals 1000mg so what is the mg or gram per serving?

i take liquid herring oil, with thyme and rosemary, and there is no fishy taste at all ... i'd love it, except it's kinda' oily ... i take at least one tbsp ... funny, the salmon/herring oil gel caps have a nasty after-effect on me ...
AND it's more or less cured my longstanding depression of 30 years (knock wood) ...
How long did it take for the depression/anxiety to go away when starting the fish oils? Did you feel "foggy or spaced out all the time?" i noticed is a slight throbbing above my eyes that has been pretty persistent. I have been reading a book called "The Diet Cure" and it states that if you're a dry alcoholic, you will still experience depression if you're deficient in fatty acids. THe book states that if you wake up with severe anxiety and depression after drinking, you're deficient in Omega 3's. Well, I went to a graduation party last Saturday, had some beer, and woke up with bad anxiety. I think I'm on to something here. I also avoid Gluten, because my ancestors didn't consume grains. We have to remember that our brain is 60 percent fat, if we don't eat the right kinds, we will suffer for it..Have a great day!!!
I was talking to someone today telling them I take 5 capsules of fish oil with my heaviest/protein based meal. He thought that maybe I should spilt up the dose instead of taking it all at once. But my logic is when you do the liquid form you take it all at once so why not the capsules?
Any thoughts on this?

i don't see why not, altho' other minds may know better -- as long as you feel fine ... thing is, there isn't such a "jolt" with fish oil, b/c it's stored in the fat, but what do i know
that's what i would do tho', if i took that much (i only take two -- should i be taking more??)
Wow! I have some Norwegian/Celtic ancestry and I feel so much better when I take fish oil (excuse me, I need to go take some now....). That could explain a lot. Maybe it explains why I feel "perky" in cold weather, too?
From what I read and was told one tablespoon daily is about the right dose for preventative measures. That is why I am taking 5 capules a day because it measures nearly a tablespoon. But I have not felt anything different in the time I have taken it and was hoping for lift of mood.

how long have you been taking it? it can take a few weeks or a couple of months ...
or maybe you need a higher dose? one study of bipolar patients was done to test 10 grams -- yikes! (it lasted four months) ... another recommends 4 grams, which i'm now going to start taking ...
gel caps can cause indigestion, so i take the liquid: herring oil with thyme and rosemary and it does not taste fishy

It took roughly a year and a half to get back to the realm of normality moodwise after I began taking fish oils. I started recovering when I ate better and took better care of myself and took the fish oil on a regular basis. Our brains needs the omega 3 to recover from whatever imbalance or damage it has sustained. I will always take the fish oil as a protective measure for the rest of my life even if I relapse or not. I didn't take any SSRI's or anything else because I don't believe in using trial and error in treating my brain. The body and brain naturally tends to balance out on it's own over time and I'd rather give the brain what it needs nutritionally to do it's thing in repairing it'self instead of using SSRI's to forcefully mess with the delicate chemical balance inside my head. I'm glad to say today I'm about 90% of my old self again and attribute my recovery to CBT, diet, excercise, and fish oil supplements.

What are some of the best brands of fish oil capsules/supplements that you would recommend? I'm thinking about getting either Carlson or Nordic Naturals?
