Iodine for low thyroid

My Dr. is an alternative Dr. She practices regular and alternative medicine. She read my recent blood panel and felt I was border line low thyroid, so she wants me to take iodine tablets. I am very comfortable with this. I do not want to take medication.

Has anyone taken iodine? I am wondering what success or side effects you may have had. or does anyone have any info in it.

I did not go on the thyroid board because most of the people there take medication and I felt this related more to this board.

Thanks

Re: Iodine for low thyroid

Certainly a deficiency of iodine can cause thyroid problems and the thyroid needs iodine to function. It can give a condition, I can’t recall the name, where the thyroid enlarges. This is the reason iodine is added to salt and in some places also to drinking water. I know this adding of iodine is not popular in alternative health. If this is because risk of over dose or just the idea of added supplements to foods, I don’t know.

I have over a short period taken iodine, as an anti bacterial, and had no adverse effects.

if you're only border line then why not take kelp tablets, which have a good amount of iodine in them but not toomuch.

I would second looking into kelp or seaweed therapy of sorts. You can get them in tablets, or powders or dryed segments of the stuff. Asian or healthfood grocery stores in your area should carry it.
