Certainly a deficiency of iodine can cause thyroid problems and the thyroid needs iodine to function. It can give a condition, I can’t recall the name, where the thyroid enlarges. This is the reason iodine is added to salt and in some places also to drinking water. I know this adding of iodine is not popular in alternative health. If this is because risk of over dose or just the idea of added supplements to foods, I don’t know.
I have over a short period taken iodine, as an anti bacterial, and had no adverse effects.
