Probiotic help

Does anybody know the best brand of probiotics out there to buy. I've taken jarrow alot, but noticed they have some ingredients that i feel might not be totally necessary. Anybody know of any others and where to get them? It's becomming very difficult to pick the high quality brands from the lower end.

Thanks
Scott

Re: Probiotic help

Hi....what are the reasons you're wanting to take them? Do you have anything specific healthwise that you're wanting to gear it towards?

Yeah, there are a million kinds

I use Protec by Natural Factors. I take 3 or 4 (depending) at night before I go to bed.

What ingredients in the probiotics are you not wanting to have in the mix?

Smile Re: Probiotic Information

Scott.......

I take 365 Probiotic Complex w/ Acidophilus (double strength) that I purchased from Whole Foods Market (a new health food store in my area.) Not only did my physician recommend them, but the clerk @ WFM did as well. I've never felt so good.

Maybe some others out there would suggest other brands; however in the last 2 1/2 yrs of taking probiotics this has been by far the best one yet for me.

The bottle says is manufactured for Whole Foods Market. Hope I helped.

Re: Probiotic help

One of the problem with most probiotics is that their life is controlled by heat and stomach acids.
Jarrow container says keep at room temp and they are enteric coated.
The problem is they are not made in CA but probably distributed from there-- so chancesare by time they get to you by what ever way they are shipped -- some potency is lost. And it is best to take all probiotics on an empty stomach so that they are not destroyed by stomach acids.

There are some brands on the market that claim they are less affected by heat and acids.

The ones I have used that seem to work pretty well are -- Pearls, PB-8, Kyo Dophilus, Culturelle, Reuteri and Primal Defense.
I am sure there are others on the market!

I would also try eating a good brand of yogurt that contains many cultures -- Stonyfield Farm(not sold in Canada) and Cascade both are sold in health food stores and and Kefir is loaded with friendly probiotics cultures--- since both are refrigerated from the manufacturer to the stores -- they are probably good by the time they reach you--- But, they may not be as strong as a probiotic supplement but they are healthy for your GI tract. And, the lactose(milk sugar) is used up in the fermenting process in case you are lastose intolerant.

Re: Probiotic help

Consumer Report tested some brands maybe over a year ago. If I remember correctly, most of the I believe refrigerated brands delivered the promised billions of live microorganisms. The yogurts that they tested also delivered what they promised. We use Solaray. My daughter had a stool specimen analyzed once, and the only beneficial flora that she had was the acidophilus and the bifido that we were giving her, so she is getting the microorgansims correctly.
