St Johns Wort and Surgery - Alternative Medicine Message Board

I have been on St Johns Wort for 3 1/2 years. It has been a life saver for me. No longer do I have the hell of depression to deal with. My question is,
Do I need to be off this before I have surgery?

I don't really know if you need to go off of the St John's Wort before surgery but I wanted to share something with you. My husband had a liver transplant in 2000. In a newsletter he receives, the transplant recipients were warned not to take St John's Wort. Several liver transplant patients have rejected their livers because of it. It may be perfectly safe for you but I wanted to share this info with you.

Everything in life seems to be a "Risk to Benefit" I have never heard of anyone having any really bad side effects from SJW. I know how bad depression and panic attacks can be. It sent me to the hospital and life was hell. I tried all the other stuff ie ... Prozac etc. SJW works for me. I feel it is safe. I did read where it interfears with the drug that they give you duing transplants. Other than that, it seems to be very safe and effective . Sure has been tested in Europe for a long time. So if you are not getting a transplant of any kind, I'd say it is a great choice. My 2 cents. BTW prozac gave me pulmonary fibrossis. Talk about scary, It could have killed me.

I am glad the SJW helps your depression. I've taken Elavil for years to treat depression so I know how serious it can be. I pray that your surgery goes well and you have a speedy recovery.

Hi,
I just wanted to add that St. John's wort has been used many---many years -- (at least 150) as a homeopathic remedy named --Hypericum.

It is used in the homeopathic doses as a great remedy for injuries to nerves especially of fingers, toes and nails. Puncture wounds. It relieves pain after surgery. Spasms after all injuries. Coccyx injury after a fall. Neuritis, tingling, burning and numbness. Constant drowsiness.

It is also used to treat the Mind, Head Stomach, Rectum,Back, Extremities, Respiratory, and Skin. Many symptoms in each area.

The reason it is used for so many problems is that in large material doses it can and does causes these symptoms -- know as provings. So, in extremely small doses it cures the symptoms it causes. This is 1 of the basic principles of Homeopathic Medicine.

I suggest you use Hypericum 30X potency prior to surgery and after surgery--- It will help recovery pain that may take place to nerves--- taken 3 times daily for several days. It is available at most health food stores.
