stapedectomy not a permanent fix?

My doctor told me stapedectomy is a permanent fix unless the otosclerosis problem spread into the inner ear, is it true? has anyone had to replace their prothesis after so many years?

Re: stapedectomy not a permanent fix?

It is supposed to be a permanent fix but sometimes comes loose and needs to be revised.Revision is less successful than primary surgery.
Spreading to the inner ear is a different issue. It can lead to continued loss inspite of the prosthesis functioning perfectly. Sodium Fluoride is sometimes prescribed to prevent further inner ear (sensorineural ) loss.
