Can vitamins interfere with effectiveness of pharmaceuticals

Hi, Iím taking two pharmaceutical drugs for the time-being -- because I have to. Paxil (paroxetine) and clonazepam. Eventually I will get off these drugs. My question is this: do certain vitamins/supplements interfere with the effectiveness of pharmaceutical medications.

I take some of my vitamins in the mega-dose range (e.g. Vit-C, Vit-D, Iodine, B3, B6).

I've also heard that Calcium/Magnesium can interfere with effectiveness. Does anybody have any answers to this? Is there any literature that talks about this.

Thanks!

Supplements, especially those that contain minerals, can not only interfere with medications, they can cause a fatal interaction.

Each medication has to be checked separately before combining it with another medication or with supplements, or foods or drinks.

For an example, many medications effect the calcium or potassium channels of the heart. So..... it stands to reason that any supplement or food or drink that contains a significant amount of calcium or potassium could cause an unpleasant interaction with these medications.

I don't know about the 2 drugs you listed but check it on some drug supplement interactions like drug digest.

in general many pharmaceuticals intarract with supplements, like vitamin C with several antibiotics

Re: Can vitamins interfere with effectiveness of pharmaceuticals

Your pharmacist is a great reference for these sorts of questions. Drug interactions are their forte and what they don't know they have all the reference materials to look something up. For instance, as was stated by a previous poster, you would think that "many medications effect the calcium or potassium channels of the heart. So..... it stands to reason that any supplement or food or drink that contains a significant amount of calcium or potassium could cause an unpleasant interaction with these medications." But that is not the case for many calcium blockers. Go figure. Plus, timing of when you take things can be important as well.
