Can't live without - Eleutherococcus senticosus

Hi

I have been cold and tired since puberty. And pretty much the only thing that helps me to have energy is taking Eleutherococcus senticosus.
I take it for a few weeks every few months.
The thing is I don't believe herbs should be taken all the time, plus I'd like to have a baby and really don't want to take any herbs just in case they affect the developing baby.
So I am wondering if anyone knows of the mechanism by which Eleutherococcus senticosus might work, and can therefore suggest any other way to stay healthy and energised.
When I don't have it, I get ill, tired, hypotension, basically have chronic fatigue, until I take it again.
