Gag reflex in cold weather
Hey, it's my first time posting so hello to everyone. I've read a few past posts of people with the same problem, so at least I'm not alone.
I have had this issue since I was a kid, every fall when it gets cold it sets my gag reflex off although it's not great overall anyways, I have a hyper gag reflex anyways. In the summer I'm fine, I can brush my teeth pretty normally, smells don't usually bother me, my gag reflex is no where near where it is in the fall/winter time. It just really hit me yesterday, I don't know if I've ever had it this bad before, just a month ago I had nothing, but over the last several weeks I've been noticing it come back, perhaps maybe of fear of winter coming and the gag coming back. Over the last several years I can almost get rid of it by not having mentos or gum etc to help ease the gag. After a little while and working outside a lot it almost goes away.
I even did breathing exercises while walking last year in the wintertime at night and I don't remember too big of an issue, but I'm sure it bothered me a bit. I may have desensitized the gag reflex, I am not sure, or just got over it psychologically, not sure. I also have trouble with shirts touching my throat since I was a kid too. Over the last few years it's almost disappeared, but now it's back. But for some reason it got me bad yesterday, I was feeling that I couldn't go through it another year, but I'm feeling better today, not so bad. Does anyone have any tips to help get through it?
I'm going to call my doctor this week to see what options I can get. I have anxiety and some depression with social anxiety as well, I know that has a part. I'm also considering acupuncture, laser therapy, reflexology, hypnotherapy to see if they help. I also had blood work done last year, it showed my thyroid was a bit off. I feel a tenseness in that area as well which makes things worse, plus I'm tired all the time. I took some herbal stuff that helped with tenseness in the throat last winter, it seemed to help, for a few months. One thing I took was THY (iodine drops). Does anyone have a tips or tell me how to get rid of this and success stories? Sorry for the long message, thanks for your time.
