Astralagus is quite often used in Chinese Medicine as a tonifier of blood and energy. It is often combined with other herbs in a tea decoction. As you might guess it has special usefulness for woman. It is quite commonly used, but as with any herbs, it should be individualized for specific situations. Whether or not it assists in absorption of nutrients depends upon your point of view. Since it is tonifying the blood and organs, especially the spleen and stomach, then one might expect to assist in proper digestion of foods.
Hope this helps.
