I drive a school bus for a living. Last weekend, I had the priviledge to drive a shuttle bus around town to various pickup/dropoff locations for our local festival. My passengers consisted of young families, people who drank too much and had the sense not to drive and older folks who either weren't able to or didn't want to walk the long walk from their cars and back.

One older lady caught my attention right away. I did this shuttle for three evenings and she was on my bus for two of the three evenings. She was waiting at the shuttle bus stop. I picked her up. She sat in the 1st seat on the passenger side. She and I made small talk, mostly talking about the old days in our town. She and her husband who is deceased bought their house in 1945. I enjoyed very much listening to her talk about the old days. It reminded me of conversations I had with my grandmother.

I picked this lady up and dropped her off at a school parking lot that was 3 blocks from her home. Hers was the fisrt stop on my round of stops to the festival and the last stop on the way back. When she was ready to leave, my dispatcher called me to tell me there was a sweet old woman who needed to be picked up and based on this woman's address, she figured I was the bus driver who picked her up. The sweet old lady forgot where she got on the bus at. I told my dispatcher that yes, I remembered her and had seen her get out of a white car so I knew where her car was.

I picked up this lady to bring her back to her car. She said she had gone to the fest to play bingo but she guessed no one played anymore (bingo hasn't been at the fest for YEARS). I went to my first dropoff which was at a park. I went to my second dropoff which was a school. The lady asked what school that was. I told her and I said "Sweety, you're my next stop. I'll take you right to your car." And I did. I watched her get into her car and then I had to leave. I saw her the next day so I guess she got home ok.

I wonder about her now. Do her children know? She says she lives all alone. She's on the next block from me so I wonder if it would be appropriate for me to drop by once in a while and check on her.
