Mom is stable for now...

except when I try to get her up and take a walk out of her room and down the hall. We take a few steps from her bed and all of a sudden she acts weak and disoriented and I have to physically set her down on the bed because I'm afraid she is going to fall over. I'm not a big person and I couldn't hold her up if I tried.

The nurses and aides at the NH assure me that they have not come across this kind of incident with themselves. In fact, she often walks out of her room and up to the nurse's station to tell them she has to use the bathroom.

Does anyone think it might be a psychosymatic thing where she feels she wants me to baby her? When I'm not there she's fine according to the staff!

I visit every other day; if not every day. Maybe I'm going over too much? The NH is a two-minute walk from my house so I couldn't ask for anything more convenient.

I've noticed she sits and pouts about going to get her hair washed..just like a little kid and wants me to be there....but I've already been there for almost 2 hours..I can't stay that long! She's even told me that she wishes I was with her all the time, but does realize I can't be.

I'm going to Florida next Thursday (April 24) for a week to visit my brother and family. Mom knows about it and her face lights up when I bring it up. I keep doing so that she doesn't forget, but she probably will.

Notified the staff of my upcoming absence, so all bases are covered, I HOPE!

The worst of this disease is the fact that our LO does not understand what is happening to them. It hurts me to know that she can't understand and is so easily frustrated.

Just wanted to vent. Thanks for listening.

Re: Mom is stable for now...

I hope you go and visit with your brother and know that your Mom is in good hands. I am sure you can use the break. You are right, your Mom will probably forget and wonder where you are from time to time but once you return all will be right again. If your Mom can talk on the phone it might be worth talking to her a few times on the phone to let her know all is well.

I am sure your Mom enjoys you being there and doesn't want you to leave but at some point the visit must come to an end. I am not sure what is going on with the periods of weakness that she displays only for you. It is something worth watching and see if it continues to happen and if it only happens when you are there. There may or may not be a connection there.

I am glad your Mom is doing better and again.... have a wonderful trip.

Love, deb

Re: Mom is stable for now...

Enjoy the trip and being with your brother. Don't worry about Mom, she will be fine. My mother got to the point where she did not know whether anyone had been there to visit her or not. My brother went every day at first (he lived nearby) but eventually reduced his visits to a couple of times a week. Mom never knew the difference.

It is good if she gets used to the staff doing things for her instead of you.

Just try to relax and know she is safe.

Yes, I do think she just enjoys 'leaning' on you both physically and psychologically. You can just tell her each time that you are gong to fall over if she does it.

Have fun!

Love,

Martha
