Mom sleeps 12-14 hours per day - Alzheimer's Disease & Dementia Message Board

Mom has Alzheimers and is in late stage 6. She sleeps 12-14 hours per day, sometimes more. When we try to get her up she acts like it is in the middle of the night. Extremely sleepy and is severly confused. My question here is what should we do? Let her sleep or make her get up. Has anyone experienced this and what did you do? How long before she will have to go to a nursing home?

Dear Laner,

My Mom slept a lot too, and it became more and more as she neared the end. It is OK. There is no reason to wake her up, let her sleep. if she is in stage 6 she probably has not much interest in what is going on around her, including visitors. It may be close to the end of her life. Let her sleep. That's what we did. My Mom passed away peacefully in her sleep in December 07...

I'm new here but my name says it all. My Mom, now deceased, slept more in her last years - even if it meant getting up later and later, to get dressed, only to sleep on the couch and go to bed earlier than before. Two occasions (different years but ironically both in spring), she slept for one week straight - in bed. Then, got up like nothing had happened. In those cases, it's anyone's guess - but while I'm no doctor, experience tells me anemia shouldn't be ruled out.
