Mother's Day & B'day Presents...

My mom's birthday is a couple weeks from Mother's Day. Can someone give me an idea as to what to get her for both days?

As she shares a room at the NH, there really isn't much room for any stuff. I've brought fresh cut flowers from my garden over to her and when I show it to her, she looks over it; next to it; around it, whatever...she really does not process visually what I'm holding in my hand.

So I really don't want to bring flowers, there are plenty of pictures that she doesn't even recognize, so I don't want to do that either.

What does one do on these holidays? I do have a card for her, maybe that's all that is necessary. She no longer is able to read or write.

I just got back from my trip to Florida to see my brother and family. Had a wonderful time, sure went fast! But now it's back to reality!

Re: Mother's Day & B'day Presents...

Anything very soft for her to touch would be good - a soft bed jacket, or a soft bed throw. A nice smelling hand cream would be nice, even if you or aides will have to put it on her. If there's a soft food that she used to really love, perhaps you could bring that to her even if you are the one that helps her to eat it. Paying for her hair to be done or for one of the extras that are usually offered in NHs may also be a kind thought for this day. If she is still mobile or is in a wheelchair during the day, she might need a new soft sweatsuit or something else to wear.

Re: Mother's Day & B'day Presents...

You time and your love is sufficient. Beyond that I agree with Beginning that a new gown, outfit, or throw would be appropriate. Flowers , balloons, a banner, or card will make the day a little more festive. You might take a birthday cake, in honor of your Mom's Day, to share with the Staff.

Vacations and visits are always too short and don't come often enough but can be a joy while they do last. I am happy for you that the trip went well and hopefully it gave you a much needed respit and renewed energy. It is good to have you back Sunny

Love, deb

I would get her a CD of her favorite music and bring in a CD player for her so it can be put on to sooth her. It's one of the last things my DH loves and he really responds to it. Glad you had a great vacation...I'm sure it did wonders for you!

Re: Mother's Day & B'day Presents...

If she used to like jewelry, some cheap costume stuff is good. slippers that have rubber traction are good as shoes often get misplaced. Fuzzy socks with the rubber grippers on them are also good. My parents NH appreciated extra throws for the beds as some residents were always cold.

My Mom just enjoyed getting cards. She would read and re read them over and over again. As bad as she got, she could read up to the very end. So I know that she could still read that I loved her!
