Is there such a thing as a "small blessing?" I don't think so!
Since the hospice nurse showed me how to get liquids into dad, he is up to about 8 oz a day! Still not peeing except during the night, at which time he soaks everything. This morning, I woke him to get him "up" for the day, and he had somehow kicked or ripped off his diaper, and was soaked to his armpits, and laying in a pool of urine. Poor guy.
Anyway...about the "small blessing"...I got him all cleaned up, dry and clean diaper, powdered and in his wheelchair while I stripped and cleaned his bed. Then we went to the kitchen (and he was sitting upright!), where I cooled down about 2 ounces of coffee (that man LOVES his coffee), and he drank it, a tiny bit at a time. Then, yogurt with his meds, and I pureed about a quarter of a banana, and he ate it! All of it! Since he was clearly feeling better, I decided to just go forth with a shave, hair, cleaned his ears, bath from the waist up, I brushed his teeth (boy - that's hard when they can't give you an "eeeeeee" or an "ahhhhhh"), and clipped his toenails. Wow. We haven't been able to do all that in 2 weeks!
Of course, he was snoozing during the end of it all...so back to bed...but Hallelujah! He had a great morning!
OH! And my son finally rolled out of bed around 10:30 or so, came into the kitchen and said, ""Mornin' grandpa!" and daddy said, real quiet, but clearly said, "mornin'" DOUBLE WOW!!
And then? When I held the handkerchief to his nose, daddy blew his nose!
A real red letter day! Of course, in retrospect, when you are speaking about regular people, all these things are really minimal. But for daddy? FanTAStic!
I also know that this too shall pass. But for today...
