my father in law

i am so sad. my fil passed away this morning due to fibrosis of the lungs. its called IPF. instead of the mind degenerating, his body gave out on him.. he as 79 and such a vital man. i watched him slip and all memories came back after loosing my mom. every disease is horrible, but he did not suffer a long time. i just had to post this and i hope everyone is doing as well as expected with dementia. that was long suffering. thank all of you for your support. love, debbie

Debbie,

I am so sorry that your FIL passed away. It is good that he didn't suffer long for that.
I think it means something if the person does not suffer too much. Lung disease is not comfortable either.

Please accept my condolences.

Hugs,
Nina

Re: my father in law

Inboston... it is different for every patient. My Dad with Vascular dementia had 13 years between diagnosis and his passing. My Mom has been diagnosed for over 5 years and still going. My grandmother lasted for 3 years after her diagnosis. My good friend's mother lasted just 2 years. Yet I had a great aunt that was 9 years between diagnosis and passing.

It depends on how far into the disease your patient was when diagnosed and what other medical problem may be present. A rule of thumb is that they usually last half their normal life expectancy. You can find online life expectancy calculators that will give you that number.... and then you can take half as a general rule of thumb. But nothing in this disease is every easy to determine

Love, Deb
