Hi, my mother (77) has vascular dementia and I need to learn more about this so that we can make sure she gets the best possible care. She's been spending half the year in the US and half in Sweden, but is now about to move to Sweden full-time.
Is there any medication at all now? I know before there was only medication for Alzheimer's. Anything else that she or we can do to slow down the process?
Many thanks for any advice you may have & best wishes for the new year!
Vascular dementia is usually related to blood flow so whatever she might be taking for other vascular problems is the only medication she will need. There is no medication specifically for Vascular Dementia. Sorry you have to deal with this disease but glad you found us... Welcome!
That is about right Foten. As I said there are no "dementia" medications that will make a difference in this disease. Sad but true. Yes, there are a number of us here who have been through/or going through the Vascular Dementia journey. Everybody here has a loved one with dementia of some kind. Each disease has it's specifics but there are also similarities. It is a wonderful place for sharing experiences, venting, and support. SO welcome and drag up a chair!
Dr. prescribed Aricept for my dad's vascular dementia. He said it may work for it just as it works for Alzheimer's. Not that I necessarily accept that judgement--I haven't seen any change, though it has just been a few weeks at an initial low dosage.
There is a lot of off label usage of medication for cognitive decline. Even in the best case these medications have a slight effect for a short time in some patients. The problems is... these medications are the only thing on the market. Many times they are not given because they are expected to work but because that is the only thing the doctors have to offer.
