Hip replacement with prosthetic limb - Amputation / Prosthetic Message Board

As a through hip amputee for over 60 years, after many years of use and abuse of the remaining leg, I am now in desperate need of a hip and knee replacement. I wonder if there is anyone out there who has experience of the above in terms of outcome, ie whether I can look forward to walking again with my prosthetic limb.

Should I discard my false limb and be thankful to have one real pain-free leg and walk with the aid of crutches? I would appreciate any feedback to help me with my dilemma thank you in anticipation. Forgot to mention problem in my leg is due to osteoarthritis.

I am an above-knee amputee and after hopping on my "good" leg for 50 years, I had my knee replaced. The rehab was very difficult but I was finally free of pain and able to get back to work. Unfortunately, I tripped and fell on my new knee and broke my femor. After surgery where they the put in a steel plate with nine screws and a week in the hospital, I have been in a wheelchair for the last month. Still can't put my full weight on my leg and hope physical therapy will strengthen my muscles enough to don my prosthesis and get walking again. I would do the replacement knee again. It was all worth it.

Many thanks for your Email reply, this is the first one I have received so it is very pleasing to hear from you maybe because our proble is uncommon but you sound positive about your experience and this inspires me as I have a Hip Replacement on 20th January. and need to feel it is worth going through the surgery. What a setback for you, to fall anddo damage! I wish you a full recovery and thank you again for getting intouch.
