What does ALS stand for? Is it an illness brought on by chemicals in the environment?

I stand to be corrected for spelling but I believe it is
Anterior lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrigs disease, as he was the first famous person to die from it. No one really knows what causes it...it can be and usually is terminal. As I already posted, many links have been made medically between ALS and mercury poisoning. A man I know who died 2 years ago, and had ALS, had no less than 22 mercury fillings in his mouth.

Newbie here half-asking, half-attempting to answer maybe my own question and yours.... Anyway, I've got a paper I'm doing on ALS for my college English class, and the research I've done says ALS stands for "amyotrophic lateral sclerosis"....is that it, or is it "anterior"? Thanks....talk to you all later.

A friend of my fathers died of ALS 2 years ago...the anterior was from my father...I did say I stand to be corrected for spelling...I am no MD...perhaps a doctor could answer your question about the proper term?
