constant twitches and swallowing problems

Hello, I'm a 17 year old male and about 6 months ago had a episode where it felt like my ability to swallow was disrupted, swallowing saliva that is. They put me on some GERD medicine which really doesn't seem to at all help and about 2 months ago I starting getting fasciculations, they happen atleast every 5 minutes and often wake me from my sleep. My doctor doesn't think I need to see a neurologist and just tells me to drink more fluid... I've been drinking 5 gatorades a day and 10 glasses of watter without any any relief. Does this sound like ALS or any other disease? I'll often wake up in the middle of the night with a feeling like my breathing is shutting off though this can happen during the day as well, I have a inhaler though it doesn't seem to do a thing. I've also had a episode in the car where I couldn't move my arm very well :/

Re: constant twitches and swallowing problems

this does not sound like ALS. With ALS you would have a gradual deterioration associated with muscle atrophy and weakness. Breathing muscles are not affected until the end of the disease. I would still go see a neurologist for a further workup. Hang in there!

Believe it or not it could also be Anxiety Disorder. Try to relax about it and as others have suggested get a second opinion.
