Anemia causing depression-please advice!

Hi all,

I am new to this board and I'm suffering from anxiety and depression.
I am anemic for maybe three years now and I have doubts that maybe this is the reason for this fatigue that I'm feeling most of the time.
And if this is the reason, then maybe things could get to normal once I solve my anemia.
Now, I have read that in the case of iron deficiency it is normal to have low red blood cells level, as well as hematocrit, hemoglobin.
How long do you have to have normal iron levels, so this other things would return to normal as well.
My iron levels are ok now, but this other things are still a little low (red blood cells 3.53 x 10E12/L; Hgb 113g/L; Hematocrit 0.326 L/L. I also have somewhat high lymphocites 0.57.
Is this normal to be with the iron deficiency? Can this values make you tired or it's maybe just my imagination?
I did all the test to see the cause of it and everything else was quite normal. The only test I didn't do was the bone marrow. Please, if there is anyone whose anemia caused depression, share some advice?
Also if you have any other advice, I would appreciate it.

Best wishes,

N.

Re: Anemia causing depression-please advice!

Have you asked your dr. if your depression could possibly be caused by your anemia? Could the fact that you're anemic and probably worried about it cause you to be depressed?

As far as the particulars of your bloodworkup, I honestly don't know anything about the levels and how they could pertain to depression or not...you're probably best to ask a trained professional about that.

But, I can tell you my experience. I was diagnosed with iron-deficiency anemia about 4 months ago. I had no clue that anything was wrong-I went to donate blood to the Red Cross & was rejected for a too low iron level. They told me to go to my dr. In August, I had bloodwork done. My hemotcrit was 26, my hemoglobin was 9.1, and my ferratin was only a 2. I've since started taking iron supplements and my gyn. put me on birth control pills. I have been rather depressed lately, and I'm sure some of the reason is because I just want to get this anemia thing cured and have it go away. I thought I was so healthy, then this. It's enough to get anyone depressed.

If you discuss this with your doctor, please let us all know what he or she tells you. Good luck.

Re: Anemia causing depression-please advice!

Thanks for replying.
I wasn't very worried about anemia so I don't think it's related to depression that was. I had some major changes in my life and started feeling anxious about being tired all the time and not being able to sleep. I'm sure it's not all from anemia, but I'm still feeling tired all the time and I don't know anymore what is the cause - depression or maybe anemia.
I know I should consult a doctor, but I'm so sick of them that I don't know anymore.
I'm sorry that you're feeling this way. I know the feeling when you're worried about your health. And it gets worse when you don't believe drs anymore. I've heard so many different opinions when I had some problems before this that I became completely discouraged. It seems that I some people have "natural" anemia, so it's not something to be so worried about - that's what they told me, can you imagine? I put this behind because my levels are not so far out of range, but now when I think this maybe contributed to this terrible feelings I have, I would really want to cure it.

Thanks again for sharing,

N.

Re: Anemia causing depression-please advice!

Hello,
I do think there is a link between depression and anemia. I am no doctor, but I think I read somewhere that they are linked. Because you are anemic, you have to eat properly. That will help. I am border line anemic and I have hypothyroidism. Both have an effect on your mental state. My best advice to you would be to take care of yourself and eat healthy. Iron pills also is supposed to help. Drink orange juice and try to eat fruits and vegetables!
