Question RE: NancyH. in March pernicious anemia

I would like any information about healthy pregnancies/births to women with pernicious anemia, as I am interested in having another baby.

My B12 deficiency is caused by the fact that my body does not produce the intrinsic factor. I have monthly injections of B12 after being diagnosed last year at the age of 34. Apparently this is uncommon for someone under the age of 40 and the average age of diagnosis is 60.

Unfortunately this condition was not picked up until my beautiful baby boy was 5 months old after I was brainwashed into breastfeeding him. At nearly 20 months old he is developmentally delayed. My husband and I were devastated to be told last year that our baby would always have learning difficulties. If I had bottle fed him, none of this would have happened. We are pursuing legal advice to sue for medical negligence and are finally starting to come to terms with this unfortunate situation.

BJ is the absolute love of our lives and I feel ready to have another baby as we had planned. This time last year, I was consumed by grief and guilt and just wanted to die, but the human spirit is an amazing thing, along with the support of loved ones.

I'm trying to contact Lisa or Roberta, after reading their messages. Roberta said she knew of someone like myself who had pernicious anemia and also breastfed their baby.

Thank you.

I am 25 years old and was diagnosed with Pernicious Anemia last September. My daughter was 8 months old. I am sorry to hear you story. I am writing you so that you have some hope. I did not breast feed my daughter and she is now 21 months old and very advance in her language and other skills for her age. I hope this will give you some hope and make you feel more comfortable about having another one. I am glad that you posted your story. I did not breast feed because I am in the military and only had 6 weeks of maternity leave and a busy work schedule. No time to pump. I feel luck that I did not. I would like to have another child in 2 yrs when I am out of the Navy. This will make me aware of the possible dangers of breast feeding with PA and I hope that it helps other women.

My heart goes out to you and your family. God Bless.

Thank you to KellieG for your response. It was good to hear from you and yes, you have given me some hope.

I assume that you are already on B12 injections for your PA. Just make sure that you have plenty of blood tests to check your levels when you are ready to have another baby in 2 years time. I am in the process of doing so now. At least I know that I have PA this time.

BJ was an IVF baby and it took us 7 years to get him. We have 3 frozen embryos in storage so next month, we will be back in Sydney for the transfer.

Us Aussies absolutely love you Americans and will support you always, as you are there for us whenever we need you.

Take care.

I was diagnosed very yound also and found to be B-12 deficient long before diagnosed, my daughter is borderline B-12 deficient and her pregnancy went well and she also breastfed, I don't think having children or breastfeeding comes into play with this condition. Go ahead and have your baby.
