I have been anemic for a while now.I've had several procedures done to find the source of bleeding the Dr. thinks I have. Lately, the past 2 weeks or so, I have been feeling depressed, just unmotivated. I went to the Dr. last Thurs and my blood count was down to 8.6. I have another procedure being done on Wed. to try to find the source. My question is, does anyone know if this being anemic could be the source of my state of mind. Even when I should be enjoying things, I'm not. I'd be grateful for anyone's imput. Thanks.
Hi I too am anemic. Before I was diagnosed with it, I found myself going to the doctor and complaning about depression, palpitations and I was moody also. The doctor gave me paxil, later finding the anemia. Now I have to go for intervenous iron, (takes 6 hrs at the hospital).
I believe being sick with anything can cause emotional changes. I am a 29 year old male and I have just recovered from an appendectomy and that brought on a painful case of shingles. I fainted and went to the doctor and the doctor says I have anemia on top of that. I have been crying for no clear reason and I just feel sad. So, any type of illness can make you really emotional. I know from first hand experience!
I went for an annual exam and told my doc I thought I was anemic because I was craving ice. that was the only symptom I keyed in on. He agreed to test my blood and decided to test me for depression the same day. Needless to say, I was severely depreessed, but refused meds. He scheduled a follow-up to try to convince me to take them adn then he got my blood work back. My hemoglobin was at 8.2 and we live at 6500 feet so it was extremely low. He hasn't mentioned drugs since, except iron to increase blood production and a birth control that may help me lose less blood and help with my mood. I have gotten as high as 10.6 lately and back down after losing a lot of blood. I get less dizzy now, sleep a little less, crave ice less, and my mood is slowly improving. the interesting thing is that he never really determined a cause adn i know I eat plenty of iron, but iron supplements have helped.
