Genetic B12 Deficiency - Anemia Message Board

Just wondering what others know about B12 deficiency being genetic. My sister has pernicious anemia, I have low B12 but am not lacking the intrinsic factor, and my mum has low b12 as well, but its only just been found so the intrinsic factor hasnt been tested.

Does anyone know any good websites which might tell me a bit more about b12 deficincy being gentic?

Also, I have read that low b12 can increase cholesterol? Does anyone else know anything about this? I have a very high cholesterol for my age (20).

Low B12 can raise your homocystine level. As for genetic, there is a correlation for the propensity to have low B12. My Grandmother died from pernicious anemia back in the 40's, living out in the sticks of Mn they did not have the injections available. The intrinsic factor can be lost through gastritis, stomach surgery, virus or some are born without it. Are you a vegatarian? You said that you do not lack the intrinsic factor but have low B12. Vegatarians need to take B12 supplements as they do not get enough of it in their diet. I've had pernicious anemia for over 8 yrs and give myself injections twice a month. If you type in the search engine pernicous anemia you will find several website with pertinent information.

From what I've read, if you have a parent with pernicous anemia, you have a 20% chance of getting it sometime in your lifetime. But that doesn't mean you will get it.
