iron-deficiency anemia and weight gain?

I have a pretty good case of iron-deficiency anemia and am noticing that when it kicks in, I gain weight which seems the opposite of what I'd expect. Perhaps it is the prescription iron I am taking? Has anybody else experienced this?

Thanks.

I personally lost weight when I was anemic, but many people do gain weight and it seems to be a lot of fluid mostly in the feet and ankles due to the blood cells trying to hang on to what iron that it is getting. Or it could be some signal for other reasons. Even though the scales said I was losing weight, the fluid made me puffy, and I appeared to be swollen or gaining weight. I was actually losing muscle mass at the time.

Yes, I do feel very bloated but my scale is going up. Interesting. Thanks for the reply.

Red face Re: iron-deficiency anemia and weight gain?

I gain weight when my levels are low due to the loss of energy. When I become anemic as a result of the iron deficiency it's hard for me to keep up with my daily gym workouts. I tire easily and find that I cheat on my time and level on the equipment! I also think I tend to eat more to compensate for the missing iron. I crave meat but don't really enjoy it so I tend to fill up on other foods. I know many other foods are good sources of iron but the only ones I really like are the cereal and beans. Too bad chocolate isn't a good source of iron!!!

Re: iron-deficiency anemia and weight gain?

I have gained a lot of weight over the last several months. I found out 3 wks. ago that I am anemic. I've had an EGD and will have a colonoscopy tomorrow. So far they have found esophogitis and gastritis. Can this be the cause of the anemia. I haven't spoken to the GI in detail, but I don't think he believes this is the cause of the anemia. I'm scheduld to see a hematologist next week. What can be causing this and why am I gaining weight like crazy. I feel fatigued, short of breath, have heart pounding and headaches. I've been taking iron for 3 weeks, but still feel the same. The weight gain is really disturbing (on top of feeling like this). Thanks for any help.
