Low Iron Stores causing symptoms?

Hi all,
I am new to these boards, and had a question. Recently, I've been having anemia related symptoms, like dizzy, faint and tired, especially when I walk or stand for even as little for 15min. My bloodwork shows I have excellent hemoglobin (on the high side) but possibly low iron stores (sorry, don't know the exact numbers). Would low iron stores cause any symptoms? My doctor doesn't think so at all. He said my symptoms are due to stress and anxiety, and said to give it one more month to see if it continues. He checked my glucose, blood pressure and listened to my heart...everything sounds normal. Anyway, he still put me on iron pills once a day for a month, just to build up my iron stores. I feel slightly better and its only been 1 week...is all my symptoms in my head? Thanks for any replies.

Hope

Re: Low Iron Stores causing symptoms?

Hiya

I was kind of in your position also, good iron level but low iron stores (ferritin) mine was 12 and the range was 22-222 or something like that!

It has taken me around 8 months to build this up to 59. I personally did not feel better that quickly - however I still do not know if the symptoms I had were down to the low iron. I also have an under-active thyroid so not sure what was to blame.

My doctor also told me my symptoms were down to anxiety and stress. I was feeling stressed but only from feeling ill and being concerned!

I too felt dizzy, faint and tired. I also experienced loads of other strange things such as tingling and numbness. I feel a lot better now my level is higher but do not feel 100%

I think you should ask for the figures and keep a note each time they test you .

Hope you feel better soon!

My Hemoglobin has always "looked" normal at 12. My iron stores were low. Causing the same symptoms that you describe. I suffered for a year. You NEED to see a specialist (Hematologist). Most Regular doctors don't understand the complexity of anemia. One doctor also told me I must be depressed, because I was sleeping so much.
Oral iron may not bring your numbers up enough. I get iron infusions when my ferritin drops (iron stores) below 50-even if hemoglobin is normal. Please see someone who knows how to treat you. There is no need to suffer and be treated that way. It is not in your head.

Re: Low Iron Stores causing symptoms?

Hey Ritah!!
Thnks for ur reply. Atleast I know its not ALL in my head. The oral iron pills appear to help a little...but still not even close to enough. Just wondering what iron fusions are? And did they help you feel normal again? Thats all I want to know...if I can be normal again .I have 10more days of school left, after which I have summer...and am really going to follow up on my health in the summer. I hope having slightly low ferritin isn't an emergency...i really want to graduate first. Thanks for any help you can provide.

The symptoms you describe don't sound like those of a slightly low ferritin level. The last time my levels dropped I also experienced shortness of breath and heart palpations. It can become serious.
I am having an IV iron infusion on the 27th. My levels are dropping again and I have a wonderful doctor (Hematologist) who is keeping a close eye on my numbers. I am just starting to feel the downward trend. I am so tired all the time.
Infusions are not so bad. I get the InFeD IV Infusions. I will probably have to have them every six months. They take a couple of weeks to kick in. The dizziness (for me) disappears after a week, then slowly the energy comes back.
I get copies of all my labs and watch for any changes. HTH
Rita

Re: Low Iron Stores causing symptoms?

I am currently having problems with my iron as well. I have been taken 250mg of iron twice a day with vitamin c and then right before i go to bed i take a different oral iron pill. my hemoglobin is slowly going up but my iron absorption is dropping (im at a 1 right now and normal is 35-65). My doctors dont really know what is causing this but i get dizzy and short of breath. Im always asleep unless im at work or school. I start getting iv iron tomorrow but my doctor is not convinced it will work. he says im gonna have to get it done once a week for 4 weeks. Has anyone ever heard of hemoglobin going up and absorption going down??

Yes, you can have your hgb go up and have your ferritin keep going down which if not treat will lead to anemia. In my case my hgb has continue to go up, but without my iron infusion, my ferritin level would keep going down. I appartently do not absorb iron, maybe it could have to do with the fact that I have hypothyroidism and have had the H-ployri bacteria. I go to a very good hematologist who says to keep me from becoming anemic, he wants to keep my levels at least to 50.

Hi Ritah:

I am curious about your situation. I have low ferritin but "normal" hemoglobin. I am also hypothyroid. I paid a lot to go to a hematolgist, but was told that my 18 ferritin was fine (low value 12 on test) and that in fact, I should NOT supplement with iron. Since I am not clinically anemic, they were not concerned and also suggested that the fatigue was somehow imaginary! Even though I explained that sometimes my heart is pounding and I tremble in exhaustion and must lay down.

Anyway, I have been taking iron supplementation on my own and am now at 20 ferritin after a month. I wonder what your dr said about the benchmark of 50. I would like to have a optimum level in mind to reach through supplementation and have some info to tell me dr as to why I am supplementing to achieve a higher ferritin level.

I am so fatigued even with thyroid hormone treatment. I wondered what your dr said about
