Question Thyroiditis...

[FONT="Comic Sans MS"]
Well went to see doc, got very interesting results among other stuff. i had a thyroid scan 2 weeks ago. was told there is low thyroid count. was told the measures i got was 1.6%,and supposely the normal range is between 4-18%.and the poor quality thyroid scan are consistent with a hypothyroid state.?? was giving this propanolol(40mg) for starters. Also, was issued a ferritin blood test, haven't got the results yet. So, i say to myself (what!?) my doctor very nicely explain to me what this all means, but my brain may be "fog" because i remember shaking my head and nodding yes, like if i had a clue was he was talking about. He had me at "hello". Still don't know what this means. And i am sure i am not the only person out there with these. Any feedback, is welcome.
I just turned the beautiful age of 40, and my body per say is falling apart..i had always been very active, and well, with having iron defiency anemia thats not really help me. So, there you have it, another person(thats me) with "fog" brain, very tired, hardly sleeping, and confused...thanks

I don't know what your doctor means by this. If he is checking TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) level which is what doctors almost always check first for thyroid problems, the range is usually lower and narrower for a "normal" reading than what your doctor told you. And if the actual count is higher than the normal range, that is consistent with hypothyroidism. The pituitary gland sends TSH to your thyroid. Then your thyroid begins producing other hormones to send out to the rest of your body. If the TSH is too high, that means your pituitary gland is working extra hard to get your thyroid to work as it should. And so the natural course of things goes way out of whack.

Propranalol isn't for hypothyroidism. I'm not sure why he would rx that unless you have hypertension or angina. A synthetic t4 hormone (Synthroid, Levoxyl, ect.) is always prescribed for hypothyroidism. So if your doctor believes you have hypothyroidism, I don't understand why he didn't start you out on a low dose of t4 hormone.

Go to the thyroid disorders board. There are lots of people there who are experienced with this. They helped me out a LOT when I was new to hypothyroidism.

I hope this helps and hasn't confused you even more.

Re: Thyroiditis...

Propranalol is not used for hypothyroidism. I work in the medical field and urge patients to ALWAYS ask questions and demand answers until you understand your diagnosis and treatment options. I suggest that you call up your doctor and speak with his nurse and go over your treatment plan. Also, 40 is a funny age. We do baseline hormone test for all women at your age. Your brain fog could be related to so many different things. Low levels of progesterone and testosterone can make you feel pretty crappy. Good luck.
